Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / what's the best puppy food

I have an 8wk old puppy (bulldog) what is the best food for her ? my vet has said not to give her mince as its no good for her,he has given me a large bag of royal canin starter and says this is everything that she needs. Is this really all she needs at such a young age.She was fed science plan and mince (raw) and got a bit of a tummy upset now i need to get her on a permenant complete food that has everything she needs, any advice will be much appreciated.

I feed raw so id say get her onto a proper raw diet (and mince alone is not that), and ditch the complete.

It suits my dogs and it suits a lot of other peoples dogs and honestly.. dogs that it DOESNT suit are unusual and without wishing to be offensive 'abnormal' (in that meat... is a dogs natural diet).

I have (and am and will again more than likely) fed very young pups on a raw diet and found it does them the world of good, encouraging chewing in an acceptable way, (which deflects unacceptable chewing of everything you own), creates nice firm relatively smell free poos, good skin and fresh breath.

Read through the threads on here, some feed raw and some feed complete, and some feed both so theres plenty of info on here.

I agree with theemx I (and my dogs a gsd and a 14 wk old pom/chi )find raw is best if you have a look at post about raw feeding there is a link to njboxers which seems very good also book called the dogs dinner by anne ridyard is v. helpful

Another raw fan here to, my 4 German Shepherds are all raw fed and are fabulously healthy. Before i fed raw i used to feed Burns complete food as it doesn't have many additives etc in it.

If you go for a proper raw diet it must be carefully managed until you know you are providing a balanced nutrional diet.
Far easier IMHO to go complete kibble and supplements of raw.
But hey what do I know.....

If I need to supplement or have a back up for my dogs raw diet - I use Orijen as it seems that it has the nearest ingredient and protein - veg ratio to BARF.

It works for mine and we don't get upset tummy's.

I agree that until you are confident about feeding a raw diet then a kibble and supplements of raw is a good introduction.

But again all dogs are different .........

Where are you getting orijen from and how long have you been using it. It looks excellent. Have you used it for pups ?

sorry lots of questions

Hi

there are a few websites in the UK - I tend not to use Zoo Plus as they don't always have in stock.

My pet shop is Surrey sells it now but I don't think that many do ( pet shop delivers once a week.)

I have been using it for about 8 months.

I use Large Breed puppy and have weaned using it with great results. I use adult for my older dogs. Just one thing. you need to read the feeding guide as I did over fed to begin with.
The dogs love it and I use it as a training treat as well.

I buy from Website - just Google and you should find some or go to www.championpetfoods.com and look for stockists in the uk.

I feed to all my dogs - puppy included and the cat gets Orijen cat food. As I said I do feed raw as well.

Works well for me, or should I say them ..........

Royal Canin babydog, Arden Grange puppy weaning and Happy dog are all fantastic foods.

I fed my two on Naturediet Puppy Food and Burns Mini Bites.  I also gave them some vegetables as a supplement.  They have grown into strong, healthy adults.
