Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / can he be a stud

Hi we have a beautiful 2 year old white/cream male pedigree dog. He is constantly humping our other dogs, drooling and more excitable, is he in need of a female.  Any ideas, could we use him for breeding??  If yes where do we start if no may be he needs his bits chopped. :)

If you read this thread you may see if it is at all likely he would ever become suitable as a stud dog.
Whether you have him castrated or not is a different matter, many dogs simply grow out of this behaviour as they mature.

Absolutely not, he's in need of some training. Teaching him a good strong leave/off command will help prevent him from being nipped or told off by the wrong dog and make him a welcome addition to the park instead of dog most likely to clear an area. I have retrievers, it's not hard to teach them manners and make them a pleasure to be around.

Are you other dogs entire or neutered?  bitches or dogs?   Certainly, it sounds like training would help.  If he is highly driven though, I think it would be much kinder to neuter him so it will lessen these urges.

thanks for your reply.  He is in fact quite well trained,  he has only started doing this in the last few weeks, and luckily he is no problem when we take him out.

What breed is he?  Has he had all the health tests etc and passed with flying colours?  Will he help the breed improve in any way?

Think I would be looking at the health of the other dogs/bitches, could be one has some sort of sore or may be an infection in the urinary tract or the bowel.

Dogs do not suddenly start a behaviour for no reason and in this case unless a neighbour has a bitch in season I would suspect the health of one of the companion dogs.

I have just had a problem with my entire male being very "interested" in one of my bitches (spayed). After a trip to the vet she had a urinary tract infection. After  a course of AB everything is back to normal now.
