Hi i have been looking into getting a pup for my son and after much sole searching i think i have found the breed for us, i have just spoken to a breeder without realizing he was one of the top judges, i will not mention names but he has asked for references.

i can get a reference from my vets but have only been with them for 6 months although i have seen them very frequently as i have five dogs already one with shoulder joint problems and another had a litter recently.

who else would you ask for a reference from?

What about the breeders you got your other dogs from?  Surely, they think you are a good person, or you wouldnt have been able to take one of their babies home.  Try asking them

Breed clubs you are a member of, established breeders/exhibitors who know you well.

Has he told you what he wants references for? i.e is it character references or to say that you are kind to the dogs you already have?

What about your previous vet?

If you're employed your supervisor could give a reference on your character. If you do any dog training one of the instructors could vouch for your treatment of dogs. Do you have any friends or relatives in positions of authority or management. I've been asked to give references for various friends and attach a business card with my title. He probably wants to know you're reliable, employed and responsible and unlikely to return the puppy or exploit it later.
