Hi, can anyone tell me is it okay for a puppy to travel in a car harness?  I have a feeling it's best to wait until they are 12 months and their bones are fully formed but OH thinks it's younger.  Can't find any confirmation either way on t'internet.  Thanks.

Really depends on the dog our's wears his harness no problem has done for the last month or more he's nearly 7 months.
Our problem was to find the correct size as he's very slight in build....:)

I dont see how it matters?  However for a young puppy I find a cage much more secure as they can't get tangled. :)

Another vote for crate travel.  They are quite inexpensive, many are available on the internet, and you can often get free ones via Freecycle.

Nothing to get tangled, more secure in an accident, keeps your upholstery clean, and your dog can choose it's favourite sleeping position.  Ours often travels upside down, waving his legs in the air - we once had a coachload of people all pointing and laughing at him, good job he didn't know he was being watched, he might have developed a complex!!

Ha ha!  Dogs do tickle me!  We already have a crate for him which goes in the boot of my estate car but with it being so hot at the moment a couple of friends have worried me that he must be very hot in there - they use harnesses but have older dogs.  I've just started using a harness for my older dog and he's settled with it really well so just wondered about the puppy joining him.

Thanks for the replies anyway.  I'll give it some more thought.

It can get stuffy in the boot area but, if you aren't using the back seats drop them down and bring the crate forward.  We leave the crate in the back but with the seats down I feel that the dogs get the benefit of our air conditioning or just more air flow from windows if necessary.

On our way back from the kennels yesterday I asked the kids to share the double seat and dropped the single one for the dogs.  The kids were a bit hot but coped and the dogs seemed a bit more comfortable.  I've also taken their fleece out and put a very pale towel in the crate instead as I think that must be cooler for them.  I've been thinking of getting a reflective sheet to use when the car is closed to make sure it doesn't get too hot before we all get in.  Worth a try anyway...

Carried my pup from about 8 weeks, he had to come to work with me and no ill effects. Used a RAC harness which was great, as a pup he travelled on the passanger seat now on the back seat or in the boot.

As my OH has a Ford Wildtrak all the rear is shaded, Um cant think of the word dark brown windows, plus we leave the side windopws open. When we stop its ok to lift the top lid and keep the rear secured and give them water. When OH takes Jake alone he is on the back seat with all the rear windows open so he gets blown to bits and loves it!!
Luckily travelling site to site hes not really ever shut in and we have compounds.

our labs have worn car harnesses from around 5 months onwards, never had a problem with them, they dont mind them either.

Thanks for all the replies.  A friend is lending me a harness she used for her puppy so will give it a try and see how it goes.

I would have thought the younger the better, so pup gets used to it, as long as it fits properly:-)

Do the RAC harnesses come in small sizes?  REALLY small?
