Those of you that feed barf, do you buy cheaper meat cuts etc than you would buy for yourself?
Do you find it costs more than feeding a dried complete food?

Also how do you get a balanced diet?

:-)

I've only been feeding raw for over 2 years now, so am by no means an expert.

The key to a balanced diet is down to variety, and unlike "complete" foods which claim to be balanced, the BARF diet is balanced over time, rather than daily. Think of it like you would feed yourself, is your diet perfectly balanced every day?

Regarding cost, I find it a lot cheaper feeding raw. For me to feed 5 large dogs and 1 medium it costs about £50. The meat minces/tripe, some with bone, some without, I get from Landywoods/AMP, raw meaty bones are free from my butcher who also gives me offcuts, eggs from my hens/ducks, offal I get at the supermarket along with a small amount of veg and I use FBO/vit E and EPO as supplements.

I must admit it is something that interests me but I once before gave them a raw bone with meat on it and they licked it a few times then left it....how did you introduce it?

Do you feed all meat and veg raw?

The only cooked veg/meat they get, very occasionally, would be leftovers, everything else is raw. Treats are sometimes cooked meat/ livercake etc. but that is basically it.

What sort of rmb did you try? If it was a marrowbone that is only really recreational. Chicken wings a lot of people start with, and I did that, along with lamb ribs/breast, which is what I mostly feed now. Every bit is consumed. It probably depends on the particular dog, but all but one of mine just dived straight in and munched them, even the oldie who was nearly 14 at the time. The fussy fart Spaniel wouldn't touch the chicken wings, but even she couldn't resist the lamb ribs!

Fire away with any questions.

It was some sort of beef bone that i got from the local supermarket. For example my two get fed twice a day a third of a cup each at each feed time, would I feed them a bowl with raw veg and raw meat (50/50 split?) twice a day?

I have been feeding raw for a couple of months now and find it brilliant.  It seems to work out about £1.00 per day but that is using basics meat from sainsburys and mince and chicken carcass from the buthcher as I havn't the space for bulk buying yet. IMy gsd started off with chicken wings and some dried then pretty quickly I went to all meat having reduced the dried over a few day. Any veg is usually leftovers once or twice aweek mixed in with the meat. He also gets some cottage cheese, olain yoghurt and raw egg occasionally. We now have a pom/chi 12wks old and I intend to do the same with her at the moment she is eaitingchicken wings and has just started with forthglad mince
yoghurt and cottage cheese. I would give it ago  good luck

The beef bones are usually recreational, as they are from older animals and somewhat harder.

My lot get lamb ribs (you could use chicken wings) every other morning, along with a small amount of minced meat/tripe and their supplements. For their evening meal they get a larger portion of minced meat/fish/tripe (the Spaniel has to have tripe with everything!) along with a large carrot, handful of spinach, an egg, a clove of garlic all mushed up in the liquidiser and divided between the 6 of them. Sometimes I'll add some fruit to the veg mix (banana, pear, apple etc) and any other veg I have. Some mornings (not on the bone mornings) they will get a tin of pilchards added to the meat and some natural yoghurt. On a sunday they get liver/kidney added to the one of the meals. Sometimes they may get some cooked brown rice.

It is all very fluid really, things can change from day to day. Others don't feed veg at all, some feed more bone, others less.

A good, easy to follow book is by Kymythy Schultze, Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats - The Ultimate Diet.

As you get more confident and find out what suits your particular dog(s) it really is very easy. I think where people go wrong is just feeding raw meat and nothing else.
