Got up this morning to my oldest having her eye slightly swollen and inside the lower lid is red and swollen.
She did have a discharge from the eye as well.

Have bathed it and she seems well in herself.

Any ideas? We did go out on the mountain yesterday and went through some long grass and the day before she was rolling around in grass, so could it be a grass seed? is there anything I can do for her today?

Guess tomorrow we will be off on a bus ride (a 4 hour round trip) to get to the vets!!! The joys of no car and the mountains.

See how it is in the morning, but it could just be pollen. Use plenty of tepid water on cotton wool balls and try to flush the eye rather than just bathing it.

Hi

Well third eyelid was right across the eye and so we set off for the vets. Well what can I say an hour on the bus got us half way there and then a quick dash in a taxi for the rest of the journey before we missed the vet!!! By time we got there I had a dog who had had enough and was throughly miserable.
Local anesethic in the eye and examined throughly.............nothing there..................so flushed through and have Tiacil drops.
Was hoping by time we got home it would be looking less sore and same this morning .............no change.

Will keep on with the drops but if there is no change by end of the week will be going back.

Could have been pollen that irritated and the eye washed its self out and reacted to the pollen? having a spaniel they always have runny eyes but they seem to self clean, keep up with the drops and hope for the best.

thanks for letting us know. If you get to the bottom of the problem, let us know what it was as the information could help somebody with a similar problem. Good Luck

I had a thought today that 2 weeks ago she cried for a while after the kitten jumped on her and knocked her eye !!! Could it possibly be related surely it was too long ago?

If there had been a scratch on the surface of the eye, the vet would have found it when he examined the eye and I would have thought something would have shown up by now. Another possibility is conjunctivitis. Conjunvtivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva,(membrane) of the eye, it is highly contagious and will usually start in one eye, with the symptoms you describe, then just when it seems to be getting better, the other eye will become affected. The good news is, it's self limiting and not dangerous, usually lasts 4-7 days per eye. It can be passed on to humans so be sure to wash your hands thoroughly when you've been touching the dogs' eyes.

Just check that she isn't rubbing it. One of my boys had an itchy eye and was rubbing it on his front leg.  There was nothing wrong with it but he had rubbed it too hard and the inner lid was all swollen and looked yuk, then I think it just itched because he'd rubbed it. I'm sure the eye drops will work.
