Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / feeding a st bernard puppy
- By fosters [gb] Date 16.07.08 20:36 UTC
hi i am looking for some advice on feeding my 2 st bernard puppys. my girls are 10 weeks old i was giving them 3 meals per day but they seem to keep leaving the middle meal and just eating the morning and evening meal i am currently feeding them a dry puppy food 1-2 cups (average mug) and half a pound of tripe in the morning (sometimes with some scrambled egg) each and the same for the evening meal. they had there second vacc today and had a weigh in one was roughly 13 kilos and the other just under 15 kilos and the vet said they look fine. just wondered if this is ok to feed them or if not should i be adding anything to there feed. any advice would be appreciated.

What does their breeder recommend?

Hi,
As ShaynLola says, have you been in touch with the puppies' breeder for their advice?  Your puppies really do need to be having more than 2 meals a day.  It may be that the two meals they are having are too big and they are too full to eat their other meals.  We would still be feeding a 10 week old baby, 4 meals a day.  Try feeding less at each meal time, but more frequently.  Their weights seem fine for their age.
Again, speak to their breeder before making any changes to their diet, as everyone has their own ideas about the best way to rear giant breed puppies.

At 10 weeks they still need to be on 4 meals a day - split their daily ration into 4 instead of 3 and they probably won't still feel so bloated that they can'e eat the middle meal. Small frequent meals is the way to grow healthy puppies.

Puppies have small stomachs, and physically can't take in as much food as they need to develop properly if it's given in large meals.

The usual regime is:
Up to 12 weeks of age - 4 evenly-spaced meals a day.
From 12 weeks to 6 konths - 3 evenly-spaced meals a day.
From 6 months onwards - 2 meals a day.

You need to weigh them weekly to work out how much they each need to be fed (one might need more than the other, for example).

The quantities of complete food really does depend on what you are feeding, but try splitting their 2 meals into 4 and see how they do.
We usually feed 3 meals of meat and biscuit and the supper meal is usually scrambled egg, milky meal etc. If they are clearing all their meals and are obviously still hungry, then increase the quantity slightly, but remember you do not want fat puppies!!  If you are also giving goats milk etc through the day, make sure they are not filling themselves up on this and then not wanting their other meals.
Hope you know what you have let yourselves in for, having 2 St Bernard puppies at the same time!!
