Topic Dog Boards / Health / puppy full off shavings and straws

Hi guys my neigbour has just got a puppy, it is drinking excessive amouts of water.  He has just had his first poo and was solid straw and shavings!  I have monitored her for last hour and she has drank over 3ltrs! of water.

I just took my friend and pup down to vets and the vet (newly qualified with not much confidence) said clinically she was fine and just keep and eye on her.  I live in a rural place and only one vet around here.

Has anyone had this, surely a puppy shouldnt be drinking this much? and would wood shavings and straw be harmful particulary if its so clumped when its comming out other end?

I would ask to see the vet again. If she's still dehydrated after drinking all that water then the straw and shavings must be absorbing it all, and as it absorbs it will swell up causing pain and possibly damage. Better safe than sorry.

Poor little soul. I agree with Lunamoona and think the vet should be seen once again.

Worm the puppy as well. If it's full of worms it could have been eating wood shavings and straw because it was hungry.
