Can I please ask for your help, I am doing a casual survey to try and find out the average age and oldest for a dog to have both testes fully dropped.
I have had a few people contact me about this as their vet has told them that 'a 10 week old puppy' (or similar age and story) had not dropped them and would require surgery. This set me thinking about the differences between breeds and sizes of breed, and I thought it might be worthwhile compiling some sort of list for comparison.
If you could let me have breed/ average age/oldest information, this is only for my benefit and will not be published in any way. No names are neccesary either.
Personally I do feel some vets are too quick to tell puppy owners that their dog has a problem, maybe it is because insurance covers fees, or they want to ensure that all dogs are neutered. My apologies to those genuine caring vets that do not practise this.

Ten weeks!!! Then when the owners are told this they are touching the poor thing every day so they are up and down!! I must admit most of my dogs have come down by then, but I wouldn't do anything with a male until they are 12 months if they are going to be done and I just tell people to forget about it for a few weeks and have a feel then :)
One of our first Spanish was nearly 5 months when he came over and as we were at the airport having him checked over the vet said you do realise that there's only one down, shock horror, what do we do? We did import him and nearly straight after the other one was there. It was a worrying time though.
Dogs can make them go up and down for some time, so a 10 week old puppy won't necessarily have them 'to hand' so to speak ;-) I can't honestly remember when my boys' dropped, but I do know that I was told to stop checking :-D I would tell the vet to get lost (ok, I might not be quite so polite :-) ) adn wait for a few months.

My youngest dog had neither visible until he was six and a half months old, then they both dropped within a couple of days of each other :)

Thankyou for your comments, I have tried to explain all this but to have other people saing the same thing should be reassuring. I do wish some vets would just wait quietly and not (seemingly) tout for business.

Think most of my own breed do drop by 12 weeks but I have know dogs in other breeds be as late as 14 months. Do not think any intervention should be undertaken until the dog is fully mature and even then I can never understand why vets remove both when it is only the retained one that could cause a problem.

My boy had only one dropped at 9 weeks, and the second dropped at 14 weeks...
My vet was very helpful and found it and said it should come down. She was very reassuring as she knew i wanted to show and that i was worried.
My younger boy was dropped when i got him at 8 weeks.

Most of ours tend to be down by 8 weeks, but we once had a boy whose second testicle didn't drop until he was 10 months old. To suggest that if they are not down by 10 weeks they need surgery smacks of vets touting for uneccessary business.
We were advised that our Border Collie's should have desended at 6 moths. When they didn't OH decided (its his dog) to have him done.
