Topic Dog Boards / Health / A week later back to vets
- By Angelz [de] Date 11.07.08 09:53 UTC
Marley has been fine for a week since his first visit to the vets but he started being violently sick last night, I slept downstairs with him and hes been wretching almost every hour, took him to the vets first thing this morning and they have kept him in, she can feel something in his stomack so he has been sedated, is on a drip and is being operated on-Ive never been so upset in my life :-(

You poor thing, what a worry for you.  My doggie has just come out of Bristol Animal Hospital and is very poorly and they still dont know what is wrong with him (awaiting results from America).  I do hope Marley will be ok, at least he is in the best possible place being helped.    Thinking of you.  Fiona.  x

- By Angelz [gb] Date 11.07.08 11:20 UTC
Thankyou, I just cant wait for the vet to call me and let me know how he is, I just cant stop crying, I felt so awfull leaving him there, even though I know hes in the best place
- By Angelz [gb] Date 11.07.08 12:34 UTC
Just phoned the vet, they were just stitching him back up, said it was a fairly major op but when hes shook off the anasthetic he should be ok but will need to stay in over night :-(  I feel relieved the item (knickers!) are removed but devestated he had to go through this so young.

No idea about recovery now so straight to google again!!
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 11.07.08 13:22 UTC
My friends EBT ate her little brothers undies all the time, he eventually died from bloat (dont think it was related though so dont want to shock you). Any idea why he ate them? if my dogs did that they'd be in the vets all the time OH always leaves his smelly socks and boxers everywhere in the bedroom, they just use them as a pillow and snuggle up with them ewww. I imagine he should have a lampshade, so make sure he leaves his stitches alone. Hopefully he may have learnt not to eat knickers, but if not a laundry basket he cant get into. Speedy recovery for him and chappie i should imagine.

All the best for you and him

xx

Some dogs are like that - flatcoats love socks and underwear - a friend's flatcoat ate her knickers (not while they were on her). I think it's the personny smell.

I hope your little one makes a fast and full recovery Angelz.

Im sure thats why my dog eats my shoes! hasnt done it for a while ive learnt but if ever i left them lying my heels would be gone, trainers the laces would be chewd. Luckily everything passed through and there would be bits of shoe in poo. I give my rats my old socks (washed) for bedding. I think they also like people smell, whenever they escape, which is quite frequently, she can move my pringles tub full of coins away from the cage door to get out. I always find them snuggled in pillows, and if i ever fall asleep with them out they come and sleep where its warm behind my neck.

Yes reading up on google its quite common for dogs to like your underwear as socks undies etc have your sweat glands near them so smell of you so they like them, something similar to why they like sniffing each others butts!

Marley isnt allowed upstairs as he has regularly eaten socks and passed them with ease but its stil worrying, so I put a stair gate at the bottom of the stairs, yesterday he flew past my daughter when she opened the stair gate and got upstairs so Im off to buy another gate for the top of the stairs incase he gets past the first one again.

Ive been reading u p and alot of dogs go for years eating underwear without problems BUT even socks, especially nylons can get tangled and stuck leading to major ops or death due to toxic shock, some dogs have to have several inches of intestines removed and survive the op but dont get through the recovery, very scary stuff so we all should take caution.

My pup recently was in my bedroom she jumped on a box, grabbed a pair of my knickers, duly jumped onto my bed and then wee'd and poo'd on it!!  She was not in my good books.  Bit worried if that's what she was donig at 9 weeks of age what I have got in store for the next 9 and more years?
- By newf3 [gb] Date 11.07.08 16:26 UTC
so glad you had a good outcome.
here's to a quick recovery.
dont you just love them when they do things like this!!!!!!!!!!!
- By Angelz [gb] Date 11.07.08 16:28 UTC
Hope you get him better oon, its very upsetting isnt it.  This may sound stupid but I assume a nurse stays with the sick animals over night at the vets!?   Do you or anybody know this?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 11.07.08 16:29 UTC
It depends on the practice. Some have a nurse on the premises overnight, others have a nurse or vet go in every few hours.
- By Angelz [gb] Date 11.07.08 16:33 UTC
Oh god, I should have asked, she said she wasnt there tonight but was on call, that could mean either really.  I wish I could have him home but they are keepng him on fluids for some reason, guess I will find out all the details when I go and collect him
- By Angelz [gb] Date 12.07.08 15:43 UTC
Picked him up at 2, hes exhausted and very spaced out, its very upsetting to see him like this :-(  he has a bandage/plaster strip on his tummy and is very wobbly on his feet.  Hes to have a spoonfull of food every 2 hours and a little water.  She said the item was very tangled inside him, prob because of the elastic on them, although they were small (turned out to be my 11 year old daughters!) there was no way he would have passed them naturally and the op she had to do to remove them was pretty major.

For anyone doing a search on this for future ref.

Marley swallowed a pair of knickers beween 5pm and 8.30pm.

heres the symptons

8.45pm  occasional cough like gagging (which hes done before after eating socks which have come out the other end the next day)
8.55pm  brought up undigested meal within half hour of eating it
9.10pm large dring of water
9.30pm moving restlesly from one couch to another
9.45pm brought up alot of water
practically every hour through the night he was wretching but only bringing up small amouns of fluid
10.am operation to remove obstruction

hope he's alright angelz. its so hard isn't it? no matter how careful you are something always slipps through for them to get, little monsters.

in my experience puppies come in three catagoreis, though will to an extent exhibit all three they tend to have a fav- diggers, chewers and piddlers

if its any help Kismet (our oldest bitch) was a hellish combination of all three, she was a terrible puppy, total nightmare! particularly liked to steal books and eat the last few chapters to drive you bonkers. anyway, she eventually became the best behaved dog we've ever had by a million miles, beautifully behaved, so theres hope for him yet!

lol louise i totally misread that and thought you ment your ddb came and slept behind your neck

oh the shoes... tio and my other half had their first altercation this week... tio ate one of liams brand new (lovely, also expensive) smart shoes for wearing to job interviews. not impressed. he was warned of the dogs fondness for shoes though, and i tried to console him by pointing out that my shoes were next to them, therefore tio must like liams smell best. don't think it helped...
- By Angelz [gb] Date 12.07.08 16:45 UTC
Thanks Astarte, we now have a stair gate at the top and bottom and a strict loss of pocket money rule if gates arent shut!

I thought DDB meant her dog to, then clicked it was her rats :-)
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 12.07.08 20:51 UTC
No not the dogs lol alltho they do seem to think they are of the lapdog variety, taking up the whole of the sofa. But its nice when they sit on my feet keeping them warm, or licking them for the salty flavour as mason does lol.

Glad he's recovering, his poor tummy. Well its a good job it wasnt a bra or thong they would have caused havoc in there. Plenty of cuddles for him and lets hope he grows out of it.

Louise xx

Im so relieved, slept on the couch with him last night and hes back to his old self 6am this morning, diving all over me and wanting to play, the vet must have forgot to tell Marley he wasnt to do anything strenious!!!  hard prt is now keeping him calm! :-) but so glad hes recovering so quickly.

Thanks for being there for me to chat to

oh thats good news, glad he's feeling better. yes, the hardest bit is keeping them clam. try crating him (if you have one). when tio  had his cruciate done we needed to have him sedated as he refused to believe he was in pain and could hurt himself.
- By Angelz [gb] Date 13.07.08 13:32 UTC
Thanks Astarte :-)

I dont have a crate but when he starts running around Im getting on the floor and that makes him lye on his back for a tummy rub :-)  wish I could fast forward  a week now so he doesnt damage himself! :-)  will just have to be so on top of him!  I took him to P.A.H earlier and hes got a lovely new bed :-)
- By Astarte Date 13.07.08 15:25 UTC
aw thats good, hopefully he'll want to stay in it :)
