My friends bitch has been bleeding now for a few weeks now her vet thinks she may have cysts on her ovaries, and would look into it and get back to her, has anyone else had a bitch with prolonged bleeding and what was the outcome. is it true that this bitch would never concieve if mated, any help would be appreciated so i can pass it on.

thanks

I came on here to ask the exact same thing?
About my own bitch, she is 8 months old and started her season 3 weeks ago today, she is still bleeding quite heavy, I just wondered if this was normal for the first season.
Someone put the frighteners in me today by saying that her friends bitch had prolonged bleeding and she took her to the vet who confirmed she had an infection - and as a result had to have a hysterectomy.
I hope this isnt the case - but to be sure im gonna wait a few more days and then take her for a check-up.
Any opinions or advise would be much appreciated

hi, about 3 weeks is average but some can vary, my only experience of prolonged bleeding im afraid is my girl who has failed to concieve 2 seasons running, she has had thyroid tests, blood tests and next we are going to check for cysts on the ovaries too. her bleeding continued until about day 41!

how old is the bitch and what is her usual pattern (if she has had a few seasons) if only a 3 weeks then dont panic yet she could be completely normal, obviously just keep a close eye out for any changes that seem unusual.

regarding the first season some girls have long seasons the first time round, one of my girls bled for 5 weeks on her first season and she is a normal healthy adult and pregnant now. :)

Ellie doesn't bleed heavily, but she does show colour the whole way through the 3 weeks, it doesn't tail off until she's finished the season, not just when she's fertile. Very awkward! If you are worried about your girl I would take her into the vet, it's probably nothing serious but it's always better safe than sorry if you're not sure.

My bitch has been in season for 65 days,we tried hormone injections as after having her progesterone levels checked we found she hadnt
ovulated, the injections sadly havent helped so she is being spayed tomorrow morning.
If Im honest forgetting the worry about tomorrow I am looking forward to getting her back to normal and being my baby girl.
Have her progesterone level checked before doing anything,it costs about £45 and you get the results next day.

Thanks for the reply's i will pass them on, i think she will have her spayed also in the end as it's not fair for a bitch to bleed this long.

We had my girl spayed yesterday,it turned out she had a cyst on her ovaries.
She is sore and feeling sorry for herself but its a relief for me and Im sure she will
be 100% better for having it done.
Good luck with your friends girl

My Lexi who had had a litter in 2006 was mated end of last year and her season went on over 30 days and she missed.

She is in whelp now and her season lasted 24 days of colour.
