i have bought two lovely puppies who have both recieved there first vaccination from there breeder i have rang my vet to book them in for there second and a microchip but heres where i have the problem they were vaccinated with duramune (made by fort dodge i think?!?) but my vet only stock nobivac when i said they had had the first with duramune and i didnt want to start all over again she said thats fine because nobivac is a compatibale vaccine.

i have since been told by a couple of people (one who is a newly qualified vet) that it isnt?? i have them booked in for the 18th of this month and need some advice or need to know if it is compatible as i dont want to have it done for nothing!!!

any advice greatly appreciated

Is it possible for you to go back to the vets where they had their 1st vacc?:-)

When I got my pup in January, he had had Duramune. My vet gave him Nobivac as his 2nd jab, never even said anything about the Duramune! I don't think there have been any vaccine issues with him. HTH

Would be interested to know what issues there are with the two being given. thx

hi thanks for your replys and i have just noticed i have posted my question in the wrong category (sorry)

the breeder lives a long way from me so wouldnt be possible to go back to there vet. i think i will go to the vets and mention it again while i am there and if i do get any problems at least i have voiced my concerns.

Could you not ask the vet to order the original vaccine in for you?
- By fosters [gb] Date 01.07.08 08:29 UTC
i asked them this but they said they couldnt order just two they would have to get a box of so many ''so wouldnt make economical sense'' but im sure the price im paying for the second jab would more than cover that cost!!!

what about phoning round some of your local vets to see if any stock it or contact the company who make the vaccine and they will be able to put you in touch with the medical reps who deliver in your area.

This is the reason I and many breeders do not like to send pups to new homes part vaccinated, they either have no jabs or if staying longer stay until the full course can be given.

How about emailing Intervet who make the Nobivac vaccines and ask their advice on compatibility etc?  You can use this link http://www.intervet.co.uk/company/email-us.asp.  I certainly wouldn't want to start vaccination from scratch again unless it was absolutely necessary.

hi

i have called nobivac and duramune who both say '' there have been no clinical studies on the use of one vaccination to another so cant comment'' but they said obviously it would be better for them if the second jab was done with the same vaccine.

i have also rang my vet just a minute ago as i only spoke to the receptionist last time and she has said based on her experience she hasnt encountered any problems with doing it this way and through blood test done they have the same immune system response. she did tell me that if i called the drug companys there response would be what i have put above but obviously it is better for them to sell only there vaccine than to reccomend another vaccine.

she has put my mind at rest and assured me that it is fine and acceptable so i think i will go ahead and have it done, the only thing i didnt want was to have to start over again as i dont believe in over vaccinating but she has assured me i will only need the one.

in reply to brainless i agree i didnt think i would have this much trouble finding a practise with a compatible vaccine but it seems to be the norm so does seem pointless to send with first vacc if you have to start it all over again once the puppy has been sold by the breeder. Then meaning the young pup has 3 full vaccinations!!!

Snap I decided this by having an indepth conversation with my vet.
I asked what happened regarding sending pups to new homes with 1st vacc,
she said it's common protocol for new vet to start over gain if 1st vacc not the one that they use.

I decided that I didn't want to overload my pups with 3 vaccinations, so opt not to vaccinate unless of
course that I do have pups that are older still at home then I also fully vaccinate them.

Some people get a little funny as they assume that pups should have at least 1 vaccination but I tell them
to ring their own vet to check, they are normally ok once they've done this.
