Help!! I've been trying for months to find a puppy (bitch) of the American type, and am having no luck. I live in South Wales and am willing to travel a reasonable distance. I am looking for an Akita as a pet and would be very grateful if anyone can offer information as to where I might try.
Thanks

Steph

Meg Purnell Carpenter who has the Overhill kennel of Akita's being one of the breeds pioneers would be a good place to visit. she has Quarantine Kennels inWhitchurch Bristol. I would sugest a visit to her, and she will advise you as to the not so good points as well as the plus points of owning the breed. These are not dogs for the inexperienced.

Well put Brainless, Akitas are definately an acquired taste ! I love ours dearly but they are not an easy breed and are very destructive round the house. Other North West breeders are Oktumi, Travistock and Keskai, all have web sites I think.

OOps I thought she/he was south west! Just checked the post again, they are South Wales, so Meg's would be a short hop to see a number of dogs and gain info.

There is also Welsh Kennel Club show coming up! which day are Akitas Loraine? we are on 16th August being in the Hound Group. It is at Builth showgropund!

I have lost track of the number of people that ask me if my dogs are Akitas, or Akita pups. I do feel for a breed that only arrived in Uk 1980 that they are too well known to the general public for the breeds good. I was amazed to see that their registrations are in 4 figures, whereas last year our breed didn't quite make 3 (96 pups registered). My breed has been established in Uk since about 1870 and most people haven't a clue what they are!!!!

hello guest,
If this is the dog for you please email me and I will let you have details of a breeder that has 2 pups left one dog and one bitch. She is based in Yorks if this is any good for you.I have known her for a long time and I have 2 of her dogs, a 5 year old male and a 15mth bitch. If no good because of the distance please be very careful of whom you buy from, especially if you have children. All of Marys dogs have been raised with children I myself have a 6yr old son and a 9mth old daughter never had any probs with either of my dogs.Good luck.

Hi Guest, would agree with Andrea, do make sure you go to a reputable breeder, and make sure akitas are the breed you want, they are a lovely breed but are very strong willed and need experienced homes.

I hope you find the right puppy
