My little girl has just had puppies( they are a week old) she is being a fantastic mum but she keeps covering up the puppies. any ideas on how to stop her doing this.

I have one that likes to bury them under the vetbed.....I purchased the whelping mats from Newdog, altho quite pricey they have stopped me having sleepless nights and worries about buried pups.....This is now the 3rd whelping I have used them on, they wash up great and are still soft, warm and good....

my whelping box has high sides and a hinged lid which I close at night. She's trying to hide them from predators

if in wild they be underground where it dark to,

i love winter litter,s as it dark they sleep from dust to dawn.where at the moment it light from 4am to 10pm.

so that could be another reason

I can vouch for that LOL
At first she wanted to 'bury' them underneath her and would try and drag them all to her but just covering the corner off from prying eyes seems to have satisfied her need to hide them :) Now, keeping THEM from hiding round her back end is another matter!
oh the joys
the sleepless nights

i would put a blanket over the whelping box,
windows close with curtains or blind ,
if the whelping boxs in the unitly room where the back door is glass cover that as well with a blind or black out lining bye taping to the door.

Yes do put a blanket or cover over the top...I use the New dog disposible whelping boxes, nice high sides and warm, I put a cover over the top and the curains are drawn but she still used to try and bury them, would hear little squeaks and find them under the vetbed, as I said the whelping mats are brilliant to stop that.....
Now they are nearly 4 weeks downstairs in the lounge with a cover up at the window to stop the light.....

My dog has recently had her first litter and she always 'buried' two of hers under the heat pad. I was so scared that she was rejecting them but infact i think she was doing just the opposite and protecting them. I just had to keep a very close eye for a few days until the pups grew and were that bit stronger. Very worrying time though.
