Anyone got any info please,
I have someone comes to classes with 2 dogs one of which is an 8 month boxer bitch, pup hasnt been for couple weeks as she has back leg lameness. been to vet had xray etc, vet has said 'she has mild hip trouble' - yes I agree- very vague!.
Do boxers have HD in the breed or are there other known areas for concern.

Any breed can have HD.  Wouldn't think that the dog would be lame if the hip problem is only mild, could be something else going on. 

thanks both, I haven't seen pup, going by what owner said its intermitant limping, not to the stage of hopping lame on 3 legs. owner also tends to be a bit vague at times!.

limping can also indicate cruciate problems too...

As a breed not many beeders hip score as it's not known as a huge problem within the breed.
There are a few breeders that hip score but not many.

Some times in young pups it can be growth plate problems and not hip problems too.
Have known of someone that did get a vet diagnose potential problems with hip that on x-ray
was proven to be growth plates. Once their food/nutrition was changed the problem resolved.

According to the BVA's mean score data sheet of Nov 2007 Boxers have had  366 individuals scored (that's disgracefully low, as my breed has over 500 scored when we only have a reg figure of 80 to 120 a year).  the range of scores is 0-75, with a mean of 16.

BOXER is ranked 87th (from worst to best) with  4442 animals tested, 3.2% of whom are Excellent (less than 4 UK hip score) and 10.9 % Dysplastic (UK score of 26 or more).

Based on those stats, especially the UK ones there is no room for complacency and every boxer bred from should be scored, as in my opinion should every dog that is bred from.

thanks everyone for the info. I did suggest she mentions it to the breeder next time she sends a 'puppy update'. I will see owner on Monday so will see what the latest is and try and get a bit more info then.

I myself would get it's hips x-rayed at 12 months and send off to the BVA for hipscoring.  It may help with piece of mind etc.  How much exercise etc. is this dog getting at the moment?

That is not good; I am amazed the Boxer people do not do more to try to improve on this. It probably means that there are a number of Boxers bred every year with serious HD possibly so serious as to be crippling

Yeah, almost double our worst score and not that many more Boxers scored than our breed which is quite worrying when we only have about 500 in the country and the many, many thousands of Boxers around!

WOW shocked to see that Pugs are the second worst breed and I think that hardly any Pug owners hipscore in this country!  Again worrying when you think of the large numbers bred here.  I know they are a small breed and have breathing difficulties but I think I would want to know what's going on in my dog.
