Hi,

I am interested and when a breeder i know comes back from showing her dog in Europe i will be contacting her. In the mean time i was wondering if anyone has imported a puppy before and what is the protocol with pets passports and also quarantine. I thought someone mentioned to me that being a puppy they can come straight over at 8 weeks and not have to go into quarantine..Though i can't find anything on DEFRA website for this.

If anyone has had any experience in importing a dog can you advise me of what the protocol is.

Thanks

You have two options. The pup can come in at 8 weeks without a pet passport and do the 6 months in quarantine, so that you get to take it home at 8 months old.

Or you can bring it in via the Pet Passport route, where it'll be vaccinated against rabies at 3 months of age, then blood tested a month later, and if the blood test shows sufficient immunity, the pup will be able to enter the UK, without quarantine, 6 months after the date the blood was taken - so it'll be a minimum of 10 months old.

I'm not sure about quarantine, its the time when the dog needs to be socialised and trained, prehaps having it with the breeder on the pet passport scheme is the best idea. At least them its running around with other dogs, sees people and they can implement the initial training.
I can still see the dog, though not so often. There is a quarantine kennel just 5 mins from my house..

I'll have to have a real think about this and decide if this is the best option.

I just haven't seen many dogs that i really like right now and i'm looking to get another pup next spring time..

Hi we imported a dog this year, he came in under the pet passport and stayed with his breeder, he was well socialised and used to being with other dogs, had also done some basic training, we are also importing a bitch later this year, she has just had her blood taken so hopefully if that is ok will be here December.  In the meantime she is being socialised and basic training is being done, she will also go to a few shows. I did think about quaratinne but decided the puppy would be better staying with her breeder.  Just got to keep going over europe to see her.

i imported a dog last year, its quite nerve wracking as i  felt that it was unfair to say to the breeder that if anything went wrong (mouth etc) i wouldnt want it....so we had to negotiate a cut off point we were both happy with...5 months in our case. However my lad went to several shows and lived a normal life as one of her hounds until i drove and collected him at 10 months. i even took him to shows there.
