Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How much food.

Hi,

I wondered if anyone could tell me how much food I should give my pups. They are 4 weeks old now and I am feeding them 1/2 can of Hills puppies mixed with Goats milk @
7.00am
2.30pm
6.00pm
9.30pm
They don't always have the hills, but I am not sure if I am feeding them too much, I tried them on a dry biscuit, blended with the milk, and they were sick? What texture should you food be at 4 weeks? I would like to keep them on Hills.

Any advice appreciated.

LOL, an entertaining post, given the embargo on stating breed ... it's probably too much if you have two Chihuahuas, not enough if you have 12 St. Bernards! ;-)

In general, I would aim to give enough food that the puppies don't quite clean the bowls, and Mum gets to clean up after them. I don't use a canned food, so can't comment on texture - I would be using a tiny bite weaning kibble, soaked in warm water.

I hadn't managed to get mine on to 4 meals by 4 weeks it took me until they were 5 weeks to get there.  I have only used raw mince and then complete puppy meal (initially soaked).  Can you not try Hills complete (rather than canned) soaked with the goats milk (I have only used goats milk diluted) - it should give you an indication on the packet how much to feed by per kilo at the specific age your litter is.

Obviously not sure on quantities, but what makes you think you are feeding too much? Are they too fat, or leaving a lot? Do they have the runs?

I would say though, that itr might make more sense to spread their meals more evenly throughout the day, unless there is a specififc reason for the feeding times you have? I fed mine at 7am, 12 midday, 5pm and 10 pm.

I too always give enough food so a little is left for the bitch to clean up.  I would soak the dry food and mash it with the milk so that it is the consistency of porridge.  As they get older it can be lumpier and less liquid, eventually by 8 weeks they would get it dry just moistened slightly so that it isn't scattered everywhere.
