hi there i am looking for advise i have been to the vets this morning as my akita bitch has been showing signs of cystitis and has been given the usually ab but the vet has said she wants to put her on cystaid for the rest of her life i thought that was a bit much as i know it can be common in young bitchs [she is due in season] for bouts of cystitis and she is showing no clinical signs of infection she is normal in her self eating, drinking well, temp normal she has had 1 other bout and recovered really well with just a 5 day course of abs can any body suggest other ways to help to prevent this problem she is given a cranberry tablet 1 a day thanks

It does seem very extreme to put her on something for the rest of her life.  If you'd like a homeopathic remedy I have a friend who is excellent with this and I am more than willing to let you know a natural way of treating her.

Think I would be asking the vet for some sort of explanation.

Hi, when a GSD  of mine had several bouts as a youngster of cystitus I was at my wits end, had tried 3 different anti biotics etc, and it kept recurring,  then I heard about putting a tablespoon of cidar vinegar in her full water bowl,  and making sure she only had this to drink,  It worked within 24 hours.  and if I think any of mine mayhave a urine problem a just put a teaspoon in their water, and like majic problem solved.  Perhaps I have just been lucky.  But it works for my lot.  Worth a try.

Good luck

just out of interest what is she fed on??

I know one of my cats always got regular cystitis when she was fed on iams...

I've been told that tea is good to give to clear the symptoms?? Haven't tried it myself, but I too would be wary of medicating long term for this unless there was some underlying medical reason??

Hi, this is the homeopathic remedy for you to use......

Start her on hourly doses of pulsatilla 6x or 30c for 1 day, then 2 pills 3 times daily until back to normal, this remedy works quickly at clearing urinary tract/cystitis infections,it should clear within 5 days, use the pulsatilla each time she gets the cystitis and the periods between infections get longer and sometimes further treatment is unecessary, once the infection is clear you could think about adding a teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar to her drinking water or her food.

Hope this helps.

From what I can gather, Cystaid is a suppliment rather than a medication, for the management/prevention of cystitis in dogs that are prone/susceptable to it. It's active ingredient is N.Acetyl D-Glucosamine which is an amino sugar. It is something you can get without a prescription, but use under vets supervision.
