Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / newfie refuses to eat
- By honeyxebony [gb] Date 11.05.08 08:04 UTC
Hi
We have a 8 month newfoundland who refuses to eat her meals which is wet meat, she use to adore it, she has just come in to season but it started a few weeks ago with her missing the odd meal, and now she wont eat any of her food, she always wants the food we are eating though!
We are thinking of changing her food and we looked into frolic but its had some bad reviews
she has dry food down all day which she doesnt touch
we have tried wetting her dry food but she wont eat that
we have tried putting dry food with her wet meat but nothing
we also have a st bernard same age, she will eat anything, we have never had this problem
Any suggestions would be great

My Newfoundland went completely off her food at her first season too.  It started a few weeks before she came into season and continued to about 10/11 weeks post season.  Then she just started eating again.  If she is accepting treats and titbits then you know she is not ill.  Do not keep switching her food as you are encouraging her to be fussy.  Keep offering her usual food, leave the bowl down for 20 minutes and then remove.  Hopefully it's just a hormonal thing, like it was with my girl, and she'll be back to normal once her horones settle down again.

Mine did the same on her first season aswel, not completely off  of her food but would miss every other meal. Like Shaynlola said offer the food for 20 minutes and remove until her next meal time. I would also remove the dry food that she has down all day aswel. Don't worry too much as she just sounds hormonel but obviously keep an eye on her.

My leo's do this before every season, go off their food. Like others said if they don't eat it - remove it. If they eat from your hand, then they are ok, so don't offer them yours,  just their own food. They will eat it soon enough. Will she take her own food from your hand? I had to do this with tripe once, wouldn't eat it from the bowl but ate the lot from my hands!! Yuk.

We have 2 girls at the end of their seasons and it has been a nightmare at meal times. The younger 9 mth girls appetite was less but did eat as was her brothers. But the older two have been dreadful.Kira has picked up her appitite. My older lad has lost soo much weight, but today he has had his lunch ( normally has 1 evening meal) his dinner and Shadows dinner. So hopefully your girl will be back to normal soon.
