Topic Dog Boards / Showing / puppy question
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 04.05.08 20:04 UTC
hey, totally new to showing and just have wee question regarding show classes. im filling in an entry form at the moment for livingston open show, and im was wondering is it ok to enter my puppy in a.v hound minor puppy and a.v hound puppy?  wasnt sure if he can only enter one or the other or is it fine to enter both for experience? he'll be just over the 6month mark at the show.

Welcome to the crazy world of showing it really is an addiction. You could eneter both, but I would not reccommend it as the 'Puppy' class will have older and more mature pups in it. Let yours stay a baby for a bit longer, it will still shine through if has the right qualities. And we all know that we take the best dog home anyway.
Good Luck!

thank you. im excited at thought of first show and also really nervous, hes a very confident puppy, and he bounds rather than walks at the moment! have him at ringcraft weekly, but i know hes going to bounce at first show which is why im starting with a local open one.

Now I would enter both classes, these days at Open shows often the classes are small in puppy and the dog really doesn't get enough ringtime.

I like to enter 3 classes.  I would enter these plus say puppy stakes.  You can always withdraw (except for breed classes) if you think pup is getting bored.  Long way to go to a show just for one class, which you might be on your own in.

ive also entered him into graduate as my breed only had grad or open. the venue is quite close by and ive entered him into borders union the following weekend, so really using this a bit of practice.
brainless - say i entered both a.v puppy classes, and by some chance i won the minor puppy, would i still be eligible to enter a.v puppy?
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 04.05.08 21:09 UTC
I would go for 2 classes in total, so if you've got him in a breed class then I would just do AV minor puppy. But if you enter all 3 then yes, if you win AV MP you can still go in AV Puppy, in fact you absolutely should if they are awarding a Best AV or Best AV Puppy, as if you don't go in the 2nd AV class you are classed as a beaten dog and may not challenge the other class winners. Also in your breed class, whatever place you get, check for other PUPPIES placed higher than you, if there are none you should stand ready in the BOB challenge as you should get called in to be awarded Best Puppy in Breed. Good luck!

this showing malarky is blooming confusing! thanks for everyones replies! now i just need to practice practice practice! he stands beautifully in house, but its a challenge getting him to do so in ringcraft with all the distractions!

If he's food orientated, try to find a bait that he really, really likes. This usually works with a RR. As a matter of fact, this usually is the only thing that works.....

Yes you can still go in the other class if you win your first, different competition.

Remember that if you have a puppy in an older class, as long as it isn't beaten by another puppy it can still be Best Puppy in Breed (sometimes you need to remind the steward that there is a puppy in an older class).

At this point in order to remain unbeaten to go forward for Best Puppy IN Group you may wish to withdraw from the Av Puppy classes.  If the AV judge is the group judge then I would still go into them.

If he's entered for the breed class can you still do AVNSC??? The breed has been seperately classified so i would have thought not BUT i am fairly new to this myself so a bit confused maybe????
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.05.08 21:46 UTC
Not AVNSC, but the OP is considering the AV classes which are fine

what is AVNSC?
so you are saying i could still win best puppy in breed even although there isnt a puppy class for my breed, as long as i was highest placed puppy? my head is spinning, i didnt realise there was so many rules etc. how long did it take you guys to become familiar with all of it?
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 04.05.08 21:49 UTC
It does say in her one of her replies she's entered grad in her breed and the original post she questioned about puppy AVNSC and AV. Maybe I've read her posts wrong.
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 04.05.08 21:50 UTC
yep my mistake - totally misread somehow i was adding NSC into the equation!!!!!!

Any Variety Not Separately Classified.

So if your breed has no classes then you can enter this section.

I'm SO confused! I've entered my pup into the pup class at our first open show on 18th May, and now I've read this, I've discovered that I could have also entered AV Minor Puppy... I didn't even look for any other classes in the schedule! I just did the one for my breed... Duh!

Good luck Suz, when is this show? :)
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 05.05.08 21:30 UTC
thanks jo, so glad im not the only one confused by this all! the open show is 7th june, he'll have turned 6 months on the 5th, so first he can go to, then we have borders union on the 15th, a falkirk open show on the 29 and poss blackpool on the 21st, its gonna be a hectic summer. its weird, looking forward to them but also so nervous, i know hes going to be a hooligan haha. he stands beautifully in the house now, and sometimes at ringcraft, so fingers crossed, just need to practice walking NOT bounding!
good luck for your show on the 18th, let us know how you get on!
- By ice_queen Date 05.05.08 21:56 UTC
Just want to say good luck, can't really add much to what other's have told you except you'll be surprised how many times you get the more experianced show person unaware if they can or can't do something, or what means what and need clarification on the rules ;)  So you never will ever fully understand...Just keep asking on the forum! :-D

Don't worry if he bounds at the show, aslong as he moves for afew strides it should be ok, it's better to have a dog that enjoys showing, then one that is made to hate it by having to behave...Afterall what 6 month puppy wants to stand still, move perfectly and behave itself infront of a large audience they can embaresse their owner in!? :D  I've yet to find one.....
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 06.05.08 15:17 UTC
Don't worry Jo, if you win Best Puppy you'd need to withdraw from AV anyway, so good luck! And yes, it's amazing how much more to learn there still is! :-)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.05.08 16:27 UTC
In every scheduel there will be definitons of classes and the rules about eligibility for further competion.  I always re-read these befoe making entries.
