Topic Dog Boards / Showing / breed standard

I have no one close by who can help me but I find it very difficult looking at my dog and comparing her to the breed standard.
Does anyone have any tips on how to compare.

Depends on your breed.  Belgians have a "Blueprint" with all the measurements etc. in it.  Makes it v. easy!

What breed Moj1966? Some things are easy to asses others do take some experience in the breed along with a very open mind. You can look at photos and dogs in the flesh who are considered good and then compare them to your own but even then it is limited to things you can easily see like balance and angulation.

Bulldog is my breed.
I have a pup that is nearly 6 months

It is the main reason most people show, so their dogs can be compared to the breed standard by judges and the results over a season (as obviously judges opinions will vary slightly) give you a fair idea of how your dogs compares to the competition based on results achieved.

You also have to take into account development, as pups can go through some awful stages, and then at the other end some dogs mature well and can continue to look the part for years and others go over, or age (loose fitness and shape etc) quickly.

The trouble is, even if one person gave their opinion on how your dog fared against it's standard, it is still only one opinion.  Standards are subjective on most things.  One idea could be to find a Bulldog Club show and take the pup there and ask as many breeders as you can what they think of her :)

Or, of course, you could show her, providing she is KC registered.

I'm afraid I know nothing about Bulldogs, but as others have suggested, showing is the best way of knowing how "good" your dog is.  I prefer "breed specialists" as allrounders don't have quite the same knowledge of your breed IMO.

The bulldog breed standard is quite a complex one , the paragraph for the head alone is nearly a whole page , best thing to do is either ask your breeder to explain it to you or like someone said before go to some breed shows and ask exhibitors what for their opinion of you puppy, they will ask you the breeding behind your pup so you could take along your copy of your pups pedigree aswell.
When i first had bulldogs the breed standard is quite hard to understand , but having a partner who has had bulldogs for 20 years and also doing the breed seminar really helped me understand the breed better.

Ps Where abouts are you as i may be able to put you in the right direction of a bulldog show or good breeder in your area.

Good luck at the show, but remember whatever you do, or don't do this will only be one judges opinion, and with puppies that are ever changing, and your inexperience may make a difference re placings.

This is why I said you really need at least a show season of different judges assessing your dog to gauge where they are quality wise against the opposition.
