hi, found this forum at weekend and have to say iv been addicted ever since!!..my question is my girl is on day 54 should i be able to feel the puppys move, kick yet?.. im finding myself staring at her tummy all the time just waiting to see something she keeps looking back at me as if to say "what you doing woman" ha!.. thanks!!
- By DEARLADY [gb] Date 23.04.08 11:23 UTC
sometimes you can feel movement if the bitch is lying down and you place your hand on her and wait a while - it's an amazing feeling, sometimes nothing more than a ripple - be patient and sit quietly with her ;)

I've always felt movement around day 42, well except one litter when she had a singleton and that one I didn't feel at all, thought she had missed!
- By Merlot [in] Date 23.04.08 11:32 UTC
Even when my bitch had her singleton I could feel him wrigling around from about 7 weeks.
Granted he was huge but then so is Mum LOL.

ahh thanks for your reply dearlady.. during scan my vet said she could see two pups? so i was wondering if that was the reason why i could not feel anything? i know scans can be wrong and she may have more?.. thanks again i appriciate your reply.

hmm day 42..she is on day 54? do you think i should worry?.. shes round and firm but i wouldnt say huge!! 99% of the time shes sleeping and is on her side so i do put my hand on to see if i can feel anything but as yet nothing??
- By DEARLADY [gb] Date 23.04.08 12:27 UTC
depending on breed, and if she's only carrying 2, you may not feel anything, I always felt the most movement after my girl had been fed and was lying down to relax, sometimes I laid my hand on her side and like I said, just rested it.....

good luck!

:)

Hi,

My rottie girl had only two pups 2 years ago but i could feel movement from just before the 7 week stage, have always been able to feel movement in my other 3 pregnancies too all large breed. sometimes you have to just sit and wait then you get a flutter - a great experience!
Good luck and i hope you get the puppies you want

Sadly i think my girl has been unsuccessful for the 3rd attempt in a row!!! :(

Hi minni, you will be absolutely fine!  Our puppies are now 6.5 weeks old and it was our first time too.  Although the birth (and waiting for it) was extremely nerve-wracking, it was a wonderful experience.

We had our bitch scanned (she is a small breed - 9kg) and the vet said he could see 2 puppies but she actually had 4.  I could only feel the pups moving in the last week - you do have to be quite patient but when you feel them it is a bit like being gently poked.  It certainly brings tears of emotion to your eyes!

Best of luck with it all x

oh yes! I can't have children, but I felt so close to my girl last summer - I found it very emotional, and she was very relaxed with me too, and didn't mind me sat next to her for ages just feeling the pups move....it's really difficult to describe
- By minni [gb] Date 23.04.08 17:45 UTC
thanks!! everyone for all your replys...yes i feel emotional when shes on my lap looking up at me with her big sad eyes bless!! sometimes i caint help feeling guilty when shes rolling from side to side trying her best to get comfy i caint help thinking what have done to you..well i have everything ready (my OH put the finishing touches to her whelping box today its huge!! 3 foot by 3 foot) i bought a large heat pad off ebay last night (they charged me £10.99 for posting! by the way) and my whelping kit is ready and waiting..the main thing im worried about though is cutting the cord (if she dosnt do it herself) iv read conflicting advice ie..clamp cut and tie off with dental floss?/ use my nails to cut and dab the end iodean?/leave the end and dont put anything on it?/ cut it and leave it dont tie it off?...so you can see why im abit confused:(???
- By K4kate [ru] Date 23.04.08 20:44 UTC
We were worried about the cords too - had baby scissors and dental floss on hand!  When it came to it Mum knew exactly what to do and had chewed through the cords and eaten the afterbirth before we even had chance to think about what to do!  I think the general advice is to tear rather than cut, hence the not very sharp baby scissors.

Nature is a wonderful thing and most likely your girl will know exactly what to do.  The funniest thing was the next day when I managed to get her to go out for a wee she was running back to her pups and I could see something hanging out of her lady bits.  I tried to catch up with her to inspect when suddenly an afterbirth plopped out on the floor.  As I stood their wondering what to pick it up with she quickly swung round and gobbled it all up.  Yukky at the time but seems funny now!

If you haven't already got it, I would recommend Book of the Bitch - you can get it from Amazon and it is full of useful information.
- By minni [gb] Date 23.04.08 21:34 UTC
thanks for your advice..yes i have the book of the bitch the first thing i bought..it was just iv read a few different points on the subject so you end up not knowing what to do for the best..at the end of the day i suppose it like when you give birth the first time yourself your not sure what to expect but you just get on with it ha!.. hopefully it will be the same for my girl!! not long now caint wait!! thanks again!!

I've got Cavs too! One thing the BOTB didn't explain was that the 'cord' doesn't look remotely like a cord, it's a weird flat membrane - and yes, my girl chewed it off herself in spite of my best efforts as I was worried she was being too rough. Also got both the afterbirths before I could blink! It also didn't tell me that the puppies poo is GREEN at first!!

hi would just like to say i can now feel pups moving H.M.G! its fantastic!! :)

I have never felt anything in any of mine.  I expect if I put my hand on a non pregnant dogs tummy I would feel something after a while and it would simply be twitching or gas.

I can feel the pups moving down during whelping and have usually found that after a pup has been born I can feel if there are any left to come.  If I wait too long then they move into the birth canal and I can't feel them any more so like to do this just after a pup is born, and usually know then if the bitch has finished.

I can normally feel movement in mine from around 7 weeks.  Feel very definate kicking during the last week or so.
