Topic Dog Boards / Health / Young dog won't go upstairs and keeps sitting down on heels

Apart from the obvious piece of advice to take him to my vet, I wonder if anyone has experienced this. Gilbert is a two year old entire male and is a chunky toy breed. The past two days, he has been off colour, back legs shivering and wants to sleep. As well as this, he is not eating as much and drinking little. Waterworks and bowels seem normal and still keen to go out for a walk. However, for two nights, he has refused to come upstairs and sat on his haunches crying softly at the bottom of the stairs. When I let him out to go to the toilet, he just keeps sitting down on his heels. I'm wondering if he has either a bladder/kidney infection or stones. However, no blood in urine. Any ideas please?

Could also be in pain, injured back or the like.  You really do need to take him to a vet.

My Cavalier behaved like that everytime her back went. She also wouldn't leap onto the cahir with me.  You need to get it checked out with a visit to the vet as it sounds  like he is in a fair amount of pain.

Hi Pugnacious,

Too many variables as to what the cause may be but definitely sounds as though this youngster is in pain - a vet visit sooner rather than later is the best advice I can offer.  I hope it goes well and is something easily treated for the sake of your dog's comfort.

Please update when you can :)
Good luck, Teri

Thanks everyone. I noticed this morning that when he stopped urinating, he continued to dribble. Off to the vet this evening, so I'll let you know.

Hi everyone,

he's much brighter this evening. Vet thinks it may be a simple water infection, so has precribed a course of ABs. To go back in a week, if signs persist, to investigate further. He has come upstairs this evening also, so that's reassuring. Thanks for your advice and well wishes!

Seems a good sign, ABs work very quickly so he may well be a different lad by the morning.

He's much better today-back to his old self again and full of the joys of Spring!
