Phoebie is a real digger ( her Mum and Aunty are the same it seems)
We have a large garden so rather than having a war with her about the habit I've wondered about making a special dog digging pit and to encourage her to use that rather than the lawns, borders or gravel drive or the limestone heap, sand heap & gravel heap ( for building) - I'm sure Sam would appreciate it too.

The thing is I don't know what to fill it with. Is sand alright or should it just be soil. I wondered about a soil, sand and bark chip mix ? Has anyone else made one and what did you fill it with ?

Hope someone has some suggestions :D

I haven't made one but I could with one:D I've only lived here for about 18 months and when we moved in the garden was the last thing to be done- it was just muck/mud, no grass, no fence etc- when we started looking for a puppy we fenced it all off with a fancy fence with concrete posts and gravel boards so the pup couldn't dig out (we have two gravelboards on each- one is set into the ground so you can't see it) we patioed half of it and turfed half of it went to the expense of topsoil and the lot- A lovely garden one to be proud of considering what we've converted it from:D That is until.........(denah denah- jaws theme tune).....Kassie the pup from Hell arrived- she's dug three holes in it already- I'm dreading her doing it as a fully grown GSD there'll be nothing left:rolleyes:

Sara, I've tried this and all that happened to us was that much vigorous digging took place in the area set out for the dogs, so vigorous that they completely covered the lawn in the spoils. Now we let them re-arrange the soil in the yard to suit themselves. Mind you had a bit of a panic the other day when my oldie disappeared down a hole and was unable to get back out. Silly sod. I use Marine Sand for Jake's pit !! It's very coarse and so is not as messy as fine sand (although of course, he still manages to bring some into the house...) :D
