I thought it would be interesting to hear of peoples' home remedies to sort small health issues of animals.
For example someone one here mentioned cold tea for clearing up gunky eyes which I then tried on my dog and it really worked.

So what do you use to prevent and treat your dogs minor injuries and illnesses - obviously anything serious should be taken to the vets.

Hi,  WOW!! The uses....like an old fashioned 'cure all' but one that seems to work!
where do you buy yours? Had a quick look online and there seems to be a difference in quality/grade? What makes one better than the other? This is a product that definately seems worth buying....

I get it from Holland and Barrett just for convenience but loads of places online sell it.

It cleared up my dogs gunky ear (black wax that I couldn't shift, vet wasn't interested, hasn't returned for about 4 years) and I've had a total of 3 days off sick in the last 2 years which was unheard of before I heard of colloidal silver. Magic water :-D

is it used neat in the ears or mixed with something please?

It's just water with microscopic silver particles suspended in it (about 5 parts per million) so as it's mostly water it doesn't need to be mixed with anything. You can even drink it (although a glassful probably wouldn't be recommended, a few teaspoons is enough :-))

Definately colloidal silver, l usually get it of websites. l did get one from Holland and barret, but it didnt have what ppm it was, and something else l found strange was it said on the bottle-Allergy advice- contains dairy.
l personally didnt find it as good as others lve bought, l also prefer it to be in amber glass bottles.

Tree barks powder is another great thing to have around for the occasional upset stomach,  l have a whole medicine chest of natural cures for my dog. lts good to have things on hand just in case.

tess has had a sticky eye and i have been using cold tea for a couple of days and yes it does work but obviously if it still oozy on monday i shall go to the vets

mine aren't particularly natural but the favs in my house are - red benolyn (sp) if there's an inkling of kennel cough and optrex infected eye drops which contain the same ingredients the vet will give you for less than a quarter of the price.

Human anti diarrhoea tabs can be used on dogs, with relevant dose reduction for the dogs weight. Also dioralyte can be put in their water to replace electrolytes if they have d&v. I also have piriton they can take for stings\allergies.

These are all really good - keep them coming.
With the piriton what does do you give?

Immodium is not suitable for herding breeds(another drug linked to Invermectin) & TBH Blackberry leaves/roots or Slippery Elm are better or simple Kaolin

Ooh, thanks for that. Sale ends 2nd April so I've just been to their website and stocked up :-)

I have used immodium on my dogs, but only after them each having it prescribed by the vet in the past, and giving it in the dose recommended by the vet. I understand that some breeds are sensitive to it, so advice should be taken from vet prior to first use in a dog.  As for reading a list of side effects......well yes it is a list of "possible side effects". All medication comes with a list of these, and should of course be read_ it doesnt however mean that all those who take it will get those side effects. I have taken immodium many times with zero side effects. Info on side effects is to make someone aware, so that the drug can be discontinued in the event that they occur. It does not mean that if you take the drug you will def get them.

Yes  Missie...Of course I have read the side effects. I am medically trained and would not be silly enough to take medication without being aware of them. But I have never had side effects from it. Side effects are there to list "possibilities"....it doesnt mean everyone will get them. If it did, no one would ever take any medication, because all meds have possible effects.

When my vet told me to use this, years ago, he neglected to tell me about the side effects, the 'do's and don'ts' and my dog was very ill at the time :(  black tarry poo, tainted with blood, and a heck of a lot of it! I nearly died when I saw that she shouldn't be taking this at all!
I know medicines have side effects, and some worse than others and this is one of them, IMO,  that's why I enquired about it.
I would just say 'be careful' to anyone thinking of giving this to their dog.

I have no idea if it is licenced for dogs moonmaiden, I assumed it was, as my vet advised it, but i didnt check. I am afraid you will have to google that one yourself ( I admit that I cant be bothered right now! ). As I made clear in my post, I was not advising anyone that it be given to their dogs, as I am not a vet. I was merely answering the OPs question about what supplies you keep. I would not have it, if it hadnt been recommended by my vet, and given successfully before.

I don't give any of the newer human drugs to my dogs & Immodium should never be given to an un DNA tested herding breed due to the Invermectin link . Vets were prescribing Invermectin for dogs in the UK, but it was never licenced for use on dogs

this colloidal silver, can you put in neat on skin, my boy has very poorly ears, its his skin, i cant use the steroid based drops he has and his cream because my girl may be pregnant so i could maybe try this, it could be good for my IBS

Yes you can use it neat, you can soak cotton wool and use it to clean their ears

try warm water and milk mix, brilliant, we use it on our eyes when we have conjuntivitis or dry eyes and so i thought id give it a go on my dogs, it works , 2 to 3times a day for a few days

Daktarin Athlete's foot spray or powder to treat hot spots.  It has the same ingrediants as in the maleseb wash you get from the vets for fungal infections
which hot spots develop into when they are wet and sticky.

1 application normaly is enough to clear it up
