I've been meaning to give dogs a capsule of oil to help to joints/moulting/general condition,  I have heard of fish body oil, cod liver oil, flaxseeds and salmon oil.  Which would be the best to give?

I also feed a capsule of garlic oil 1000mg a day to help avoid pests!   After a previous post on here I'm wondering if this is okay.

Not sure about the garlic capsules, but I can vouch for the Salmon Oil as recommended by Ktee.
Has done wonders for my two dogs coats.  The company were really really helpful and prompt too.

Definitely Salmon oil,and dont forget VitE which must also be given with fish oil. :)

Cod liver oil is ok too but is very high in vit A.
Flaxseed is hard to convert for some dogs. But i have never heard anything negative about fish oils,all good reports.

Thanks for that, just bought some, I was about to post asking whether to give pup a can of sardines a week or cod liver (things people have reccomended this wk)-this looks much better :-)

I buy kronch salmon oil from Ebay..it`s excellent!!

so if i give my dogs salmon oil i also have to give them vitamin E as well where do you all get you vitamin E  from .where is the best place to get it from for a house with  multi dogs  to dose. i have found the kronch salmon oil from Ebay.

I get all of dogs supps from the human health food store.If i was going to buy oils made specifically for pets i would definitely go for either Kronch or grizzly.

Here are the recommended dosages:

Fish oil: 1000 mg per 30 lbs of healthy dog,
            1000 mg per 20 lbs of itchy/flaky dog
            1000 mg per 10 lbs of chronically ill dog.

VitE is 100iu per 25lb dog. Also, keep in mind that the natural E(D-alpha) is more potent and effective than synthetic E's(DL-alpha).

Garlic is great for it's antibiotic properties when combined with fenugreek;  also used as an anti-parasitic.

Kronch also do Lakse Kronch biscuits which are salmon oil based.....not sure on content/quantity as haven't used them for a time, but may be a useful way of getting the supplement in to your dog if you have any problems on that front.

Because Fish oil depletes VitE in the body.This needs to be given in conjunction no matter what other food is being fed.
Billingurst says "The VitE prevents rancidity of polyunsaturated oils in your pets body"

I give 1000mg fish oil daily and 200iu E every second day.

hi i used to use vitapet and vitapet R A for the oldies all of which worked really well , garlic is also good just get them cheap from superdrug or similar.

I agree, either Kronch or grizzly both are A1 quality

the only difference between the two is that kronch has a foil top and therefore a longer unopened shelf life.

both are cold pressed, other brands boil the fish and scoop the oil off the top. I have heard that the quality is so high that it is safe for human consumption.

avoid anything that just says fish oil. These could be anything left in the bottom of the trawlers nets that no one else wants. Yuk

recently got the Kronch salmon oil for my lot, think I got it from Canine Cures, or something similar, free postage

found that it made my oldest boy a bit squitty, all the others are fine on it as far as I can tell, though they've only been on it about a week.. ;)

Did the same to my boy. I carried on giving it to him thinking he would maybe adjust to it, but then he threw up twice. He reacts the same to fish body oil and glucosamine and chondroitin as well. Strange as he is completely fine with oily fish (salmon included) several times a week, even to the point of being fed a big enough portion to make a whole meal with nothing else included.

well I stopped giving it to my boy, all the others are fine. He will eat pilchards and other fish, and vegetable oil doesn't have this effect. I guess I will see if there is any major difference between him and the others after they've been on it a while, and I may try and re-introduce it if I think it would benefit him.

I guess they can be a  bit like us, in that certain foods just don't agree with individual dogs...
