Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Disappointed :(

Just found out today from vet that my girl is "95% sure she is not pregnant" his words. I didn't think it would affect me so much but I am gutted. She is having a phantom and I could have sworn she might have been pregnant but never mind. I am still hoping on that "5%" chance she is but i doubt it. Has any one else felt this gutted or had the same vets out come but their bitch has gone on to produce a litter? She is a large breed so I am still hoping that she may have a little one tucked up in her ribcage somewhere just waiting to surprise eveyone.
Regards,
J :(

Yes to the disappointed (so hard to have to wait for another 6 - 9 months, even worse disappointing all the people on your waiting list), but no never had an unexpected litter, my vet has always been right when he made a negative diagnosis.

Yeah, I don't doubt my vet and I know he is right but I am ever the optimist even when I know there is no point to be one. My girl has her seasons every 5 months (unfortunately for her) so you never know next time maybe :)
Thanks for your reply.

My friend who we were hoping to have a dog from had exactly the same thing.

She took her bitch to the vets and was told it was a phantom pregnancy, she told me ia email and I was so gutted, well you can imagine my surprise when she emailed a month later to say her dam had had 5 healthy beautiful puppies during the night!! The vet said afterwards when she told them they must have been hiding behind her ribs (5 pups!!!) so maybe the same has happened with yours?

Keeping my fingers crossed but try not to get your hopes up to be dissapointed again.

We still couldnt get one from my friend in the end tho, as we wanted a boy and she had all girls! typical!! lol

Problem now for you, Is your dog,  your dog still thinks she is, her hormones are all messed up untill after what would of been her due date. I find keeping your bitch busy and active alot try keep her mind off it.Lots of emotional loves and understanding. Has she got milk? in her barrels this need to be dealt with before she gets a problem. The vet can give you some tablets to dry her up.

Sorry hope it helps.

I have just been through the same thing with my bitch.Had her mated with a very good dogtied both times.I was so sure she was but the scans showed no puppies and the vet could not feel any.The due date has come & gone.
One very disappointed owner (I wanted to keep another puppy from this litter for showing) and some disappointed people waiting for a puppy.Looking on the bright side, will try again  at her next season.

I was told this a few years ago, but the vet recommended that I didn't change any regime until after her due date, just in case, as bitches can have a pup or two well hidden. Unfortunately she never did have any more pups :-(

I've also had an accidental litter. The mum was 7 1/2 weeks pregnant before I had any idea that she had mated. She had 4 pups. All survived until they were 13 years old :-)

how far is the bitch have you had her scanned?

Don't always trust vets and don't always trust scans!!!

We had a Pomeranian once, we were sure that she was pregnant, took her to the vets and they said that she definitely wasn't pregnant, she had five later on that evening!  Breed average litter is 2, 3 if you are lucky!

Then of course my boy was used recently.  Owner of the bitch had her scanned, nope nothing there, owners were sure that she was so asked for her to be re-scanned.  Scanner said one, two if she's lucky, she had 5!
