Hi
all I can say is when I viewed litters when looking for my pups over the years, I saw quite a few with a umb hernias.  Most breeders were honest about their pups and offered a reduction in price (around £100 off) to pay towards the cost of repairing it by the vet.  Most can be done when either spaying or castration.  I would ring the breeder and ask their opinion I cant believe they wouldnt have noticed it but then maybe you should have examined the pup before you agreed to buy it (please dont think I am being rude when I say that) its far easier to sort these things out when you are there.  Most decent breeders would be more than happy to discuss any problems you have with your new pup.  Best of luck.

No I don't think your being rude, I did check her as much as i could. I suppose its something i have not known before .

It wasn't until i was holding her on my lap and spending more time that i noticed it?

I am happy i have her, its just worrying when you have not exp this before and that the breeder just wasn't up front!

Anyway thanks for your reply

how long have you had puppy?  i know ive said on another thread but I do find it odd that it went un-noticed....  I would let your breeder know anyway and see what they advise.....  also ask your vet and see if they can tell you when the hernia was likely to have developed, could it have happened overnight or was it a hernia that would have developed over a few days/weeks

If it is a small hernia then it is no big deal and not something that should affect the pup, and shouldn't ever need surgery.

My 8 year old champion bitch had a very small outy button.  When she was born her mother Had chewed the cord down so close that there was a wound, and after the scab dropped off at about two weeks there was a little bump, and by 8 weeks it was just like a small raised bump that was obviously tightly closed over.  She has had 3 litters and no hernias in any of her pups or in her grandchildren.

This link may help: http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenlclub/breedvet/umbilical.html

If a pup is sold as companion as most are and any show or breeding potential is a bonus then I see no need for a price reduction unless it is obvious that the hernia needs repair, and in that case if it was that serious I would have it done before the pup was homed.

Serious hernias are an issue in some breeds and certainly seem to be hereditary, but the occasional late closure is not a big deal or cause for concern.

The kennel club will allow dogs with repaired hernias to be shown (they had not for a short while) but it seems that the case for heritability is still unclear so they now do not prevent them being shown.
