Hi we have a 6 day old pup whom last night she cried for about an hour..read all my Book of Bitch...hubby thought it did sound like Seagull cry...called my Mentor who is on Holiday abroad then searched on here...we gave her boiled water & honey (syringe 1 ml)  she took that ok and seemed to settle..still just doesnt seem right..This is my 2nd litter she is one of 3..the two others are ok so far...hoping its just colic..she is Tiny Toy Breed..mum is not that attentive to her as the other 2 (hubby thinks she is)..cant think what else to add but she is settling and not crying as much..whining a little but again not content as the the other 2...typing through tears so excuse the repeats & spelling please...waiting on Locum vet to call back (my vet is away for easter)...sigh!..keeping the room toasty and she is warm...we have snow! I really hope I am being over anxious mum..anything you wonderful people suggest would help or ease me..I am aware of fading puppy and thinking I maybe paranoid..something tells me she is not right..bye & thank you

Instincts are very rarely wrong, always go with them.

I hope that it is colic, have you tried very gently rubbing her little tum, perhaps some warm water on a piece of cotton wool to ease any tum pain and cuddling her close, does she stop crying when you do this?

Is she feeding ok?

Glad that you have called your vet albeit a locum, it is always worth getting your pups checked over.

Keep us informed, until you get a proper diagnoses it is difficult to offer advice not knowing what the problem is, for now keep her warm, make sure she is feeding and give her tummy a little rub to see if it stops her cries.

Thank you for the reply..its really supportive this site..thanks!

Yes she was feeding well its only since last night 8pm ish i heard crying and it lasted over the hour...
Hubby rubbed her tum and she seemed happy being close to our skin also..gave her the water & honey too..
she stopped crying then..

will try the cotton wool on tum too thanks..

she is sleeping but whiny..not loud like last night tho.. suckling mum but not as strong as to feed if you know what mean...
I do have lactol & carnation milk so might try that...waiting to hear from locum vet first

Mum has licked/cleaned her which is good as she wasnt interested last night ..tho did stand at whelping box crying as if she didnt know what was up...

I do feel something is not quite right sadly

still waiting on the call back

Hi, quck list of things to check, has she gained/lost weight since yesterday, check her for dehydration by pinching skin on withers/shoulder, when feeding is she "latching on" to Mum, are you sure when feeding she is acutally getting losts of milk?  Have you checked her poo for colour/consistency?  Tummy rubs coudl well be the way to go if it is colic, however need to be on the look out for other problems, with the tinies speed of action can be everything, as they have so little inreserve.  Jsut in case do you have lectade or dioralyte available?
Hope everything is OK
bye

Thanks Gwen...you were a fab help at  champ show in scotland! my puggy came 2nd in his group due to borrowing a LUCKY Brooch/pin from you..that i forgot 3 years ago!!!

anyway Vet called back and really says all what has been said/read  already and to keep a very Close eye on the other 2 incase of infection..spreading...etc...also to make sure she's feeding & warm..he recommended goats milk ..give her till teatime and ring if anything else appears or doesnt improve...she seems (fingers crossed a little better not whimpering every 5 mins) mum has cleaned and just going to get her to latch again to see if I can spot her having difficulties..Mum cleans her poo very well so not really had the chance too look so will try doing it myslef and see what colour as I never thought of that until you suggested...oops!
I have Dioralyte on stand by..thanks
Do you think I should try Goatsmilk...carnation solution or lactol?
So waiting and praying and taking good care for now..
will keep you updated
Thank you all xx

Hi again,

Glad to hear she is more settled.  If she is latching on well, and you are sure she is actually getting lots of milk, then I woudl not supplement.  However, if she is having trouble latching or is fussing when trying to feed, then go ahead and give some milk.  I always use a carnation milk solution - 1small can of carantion. equal quantity of boiled cooled water, and egg yolk (no white at all) a drop or two of glucose if you have it.  Goatsmilk is great for older pups, but not quite yet, and I am not happy using powdered mixes as it is impossible to reconstitue completley I feel.

Good luck

bye

Goats milk always gets my highest recommendation, (pasturised) though I would add an egg yolk to it, stir and feed luke warm. Does your vet think she is not feeding enough?  I guess it will do no harm to top up, just stay by her, it is very difficult at this age to always know what is wrong, as long as the dam is cleaning her regularly as well, some bitches do get terribly distressed if a pup continues to cry, constipation may be another reason, perhaps you should use the warm cotton wool rubbed on her tum to stimulate toilet as well as an ease for colic incase this is also the problem, try to encourage your bitch to lick and clean her as much as possible and place the pup on the back teats.

Fingers crossed that she will pull through ok.

Hi Have you tried lactos milk for puppy, Think going need to hand rear this baby every 2 hours feed day and night. How you keeping this baby warm? . Also warm damp cotton wool to stimulate  for poo's after a feed, all that mum would do but mam not licking and looking after then you going to have to take over.. Have you tried putting a cuddle toy in a company as well.  Just some idea's hope it help.

I had a kitten that did this crying , but I found out it was crying for me. It had a problem birth and I had to help get it breathing . The kitten thought my smell was the smell of mum.(not that I smell ,lol) so when I put him with his mum he screamed. Only when I was near him was he quite. I kept him as he was to attached to me and had him for 6 years. An till I lost him to a road accident . Hope your pup gets better maybe he just wants you, like my kitten did
