Hello all

Does anyone know if its ok to keep giving my 13 1/2 yr old dobe white fish (Cod or coley) with his dry food (chappie... vet advised chappie as it's easy to digest) Jet won't eat canned chappie or dry chappie on it's own... the only way i can get him to look at it is to cook fish and add it to his dish....  he looooves chicken but it gives him a gippy tummy....

I know you can get complete dog foods with fish... but not at the quantities i am giving it... I mentioned this to my vet she seemed noncommital......

Jet uesd to eat whatever i gave him ( eukanuba ) all his life... this is now causing him to have the runs...

Heeeeelp. Ta x

Hi Lisa

Hi Karen

I was spoiling him rotten... as you say as long as it doesn't upset them..... then we had projectile poo.....not nice....:-(

I will persevere  with the fish...

Thx Lisa:-)

My oldest dog loves Tinned srdines in tomato suce which I occasionally give him mixed with his Royal Canin.I have seen fresh salmon scraps/tait ends and cod etc reduced at my local supermarket.I know he will enjoy these but I haven't given him any as I am scared of the little bones. Is it o.k to give it to him?

My Dobe eats whole fresh fish - heads, tails, fins etc. He's never had a problem with them. Some people do worry about the sharp bits though, and some dogs just flat out refuse to eat raw fish (and then there are the ones that will eat it but "return to sender" the same way it went in ). I bought nearly 2kg of salmon trimmings yesterday for just under £3! I split them into individual portions and freeze them. Can't believe that they give them away so cheaply - they are still smothered in juicy salmon meat. Fab :-D

Not to worry you Cornishmals, however I have read on several websites that it is unsafe to give dogs tomatoes as they can cause tremors and heart arrythmias.

Not sure about the tomatoes, mine love tomato saucie things. But i have always thought RAW salmon was a big no-no. I cant remember the name of the condition/bug though :(

I am going to give the salmon a miss as I am afraid the bones are too big,I know fish4dogs do a salmon oil supplement so salmon itself must be ok but maybe a little rich. The dogs don't eat raw Tomatoes.I personally hate them.Smell, texture yuk.But cooked tomatoes are fine.I guess with all meat its better frozen/cooked.I know fresh raw fish can have fish worms.

Hi

My vet advised feeding white fish (as an alternative to chicken) when my pup had a dickie tummy.  She said it's worth keeping some white fish blocks in the freezer for emergency measures, so it must be fine for them.  I have been giving chicken, but after much web research, I am inclined to think that fish is probably better for them.  Easier to digest and very good for them.

Not sure where you heard that Ktee. Raw salmon is fine as long as it has been frozen first. I would never buy it fresh and feed it as is (the same as any other fish or meat). I think it is a parasite that salmon can carry. I know of dozens of people here and on the raw feeding groups that feed raw salmon. Morrisons seem to specifically pack up the trimmings for cat and dog owners - I'm usually lucky to get hold of any from there!

"Pacific salmonids carry a toxic parasite that can make dogs very sick. Freeze fresh raw salmon, steelhead, trout, and other salmonids for at least 24 hours before feeding to your dog; this thoroughly kills the parasite."

have you not tried tinned fish like tuna or salmon or any kind?
