Just came back from an open show (just took Best of Breed - sorry, couldn't help the brag !!!) but need some advise on what shampoo you all think is the best to use. I had used "Dog For Life - Rosemary & Lavender shampoo" but the day after bathing leaves white scurfy stuff in her coat. There were dobes in the ring that shone and I has a sly peek whilst in the group judging and I couldny see any scurfy bits in his coat. Was going to ask what they used but forgot in the exitement.
Looking forward to your recomendations,
Aimi x

My brother uses Johnsons baby shampoo for his Weim, her coat is fabulous! Try using a rubber glove/brush on the coat and then a velvet glove (piece of velvet sewn together) that should give you a lovely shine :)

Just a thought, but are you absolutly sure you are rinsing it out fully?

I use Exmarid. It is a coal tar shampoo and of course is kind to the skin and also leaves a shine.
Thanks everyone. The velvet does give a lovely shine - I always rub with that but it is what comes from underneath that bothers me.
I have had the white bits before and already thought that I may not have rinsed her well enough so I really really rinsed this time but the white bits were still there. Maybe the shampoo is too strong?
Is the Exmarid a dog shampoo?

Yes, it is a dog shampoo. It is actually supposed to be dogs prone to a dry, flaky or itchy skin. It is made by Seven Seas but you will find it in any pet shop.

The Dobes were most probably not bathed at all, but sprayed with a coat shine/conditioner which smells yummy too.
If your Boxer has scurf it could be the bathing that's causing it to rise? Use Gentlemans Vaseline hair tonic, as found in small chemists shops a few days before a show instead. Rub it in and it will dissapear. I also use Johnson baby wipes with lanolin too. I have a brown Dobe and they are renown for having bad coats, but hers is so good that people comment on it.

Another thought, perhaps adding more oil to the feed may help bring out the shine on top. Also, if you go to a Tack/Equine supply shop they do coat shine wipes which smell great and lokk wonderful on a short haired coat.
I woudl be very careful about using any pet shop type shampoo, and would suggest fiding a good quality mild shampoo wiht Tea Tree oil.

I had this problem
I now use this stuff called "Squirt Stuff for Dog" it was created by the guy who made Fudge human shampoo's, he designed it for his own boxer and it actually does work, I also like to put a tiny tiny amount of plush puppy sea breeze oil mixed with 2 litres of water over the coat after bathing and leave it in.
It really works for my dogs, their coats dont have any scurf now the day(s) after bathing and they look soooooooo shinny.
Well done on the BOB :)
Do you think I shouldn't bath her body before a show - just her white socks and feed oil perhaps a week before and use a coat shine instead. She never has any white scurfy bits normally. Trouble is she is frequently running through mud at the farm and gets a muddy belly (which she shows when she messes and rolls on her back in the ring whilst waiting for her turn). I could always wash her tum with baby wipes on the morning of the show.
What is the coat shine the dobes use then?
Gemma, I have ised the Squirt and didn't like it, but what is the plush puppy sea breeze oil and where do you get it from?

My Friend when she showed her dobes would never bath just before a show but at least several days to allow the skin to return to normal, as the flaking seems to be usual after a bath.
They also rub in baby oil into the nails and a bit on the body.
I would say only bath if the dog is dirty and just do the white bits before a show.

You can get plush puppy at most champ shows but also online
http://www.plushpuppy.co.uk/I guess shampoos depend on the dog and what works for them, its all trial and error, I've been through tones of shampoos just for myself! lol
