Help. I have a 22 month old Basset Hound that I'm trying to breed for the first time. I own the stud and made sure both lines are clean and unrelated. Both are virgins. I seperated my bitch and stud from my baby (8 month old) Basset Hound (which has come into heat also). My stud will not mount my bitch. He will try to mount the baby when we bring them inside for the night. They all sleep seperately.
I took my bitch to the vet and was told that she needs to be breed within the next few days to concieve. Any advice?

The dog may know that the puppy is READY and the older bitch is not. You still have a few days so you may be lucky, I believe it can be difficult with two first timers. Perhaps you will have to wait until her next season and find her an experianced stud for her by then. Sometimes the bitch just does not want a certain male and I don't think there is anything short of encouraging rape that you can do about it. At 22 months you have plenty of time yet if you don't get your puppies this time around. Jackie H

Hi Troubled
I'm not an experienced breeder by any means - but I think you need to keep the baby out of the way all together. It will be distracting your boy.
Another thing you can try is rubbing a dry cloth over your baby and then rub that over your bitch to transfer the "aroma":D. In my limited experience, dogs and bitches often know when the time is right and they'll get on with it. But as they are both maiden's it's easy for them to be distracted as they are still not 100% sure what to do.
Do you shout/correct your boy when he mounts the pup? If so - and I hope you do as you don't want pups from there yet - then that will also confuse him. It's another reason for keeping baby away until all is over. (Including her season as you'll end up with unwanted pups from a bitch that is far too young.)

Hi there bassets are not the easyest to breed you have to do the mating yourself eg dogs too heavy to do it alone i have done about 30 bassets matings and none was easy.but to seek a basset breeder for help with the mating it take at least two people .
