hi i have a four year old male newfoundland who is constantly tryin g to mount anyone that comes in the house whether our female is in season or not, he trys to show his dominance by using his weight 11 stone and his big head to barge his way through doorways, he refuses to do as he is told. yet when he was in kennels he was so well behavedthey thought i was imagining it all. he is very playful we run up barking at other dogs but because of his size he frightens people but he is never aggressive only once with my husband who is very stern with him. somone told me castration clams them down is this true for his size the vets want £150 but i dont want to pay this if it does not work. we have three other dogs 2 females (a staffy and toy yorkie) and a male great dane cross blood hound) we dont want pups. poppy is four in octoberand is just having her first season bles her but he (her companion) is giving us hell please can anyone help

you can get your vet to administer the tardak injection which will give you an idea of what your dog will be like if castrated.

Castration will only affect things that are sexually driven.  A lot of mounting behaviour, especially when there is no in season bitch around is behavioural and not sexual, so would not be affected by castration.

If he was well behaved in kennels it might be worth asking what their routine and management of him was that is different to at home and give that a go.

Distraction and training is the best cure for unwanted behaviour, teach him things that are incompatible with mounting behaviour so that he can be distracted into a behaviour for which he can be rewarded, as often it is about attention.
