Topic Dog Boards / Health / Male pup Question

My youngest pup is now 7 months. He is leggy very uncoordinated ..very straight knees (I dare say prone to luxation..from experience)...possible bad hips..who knows...he is VERY loosly put together for lack of a better description. He in a way reminds of the stretch armstrong dolls you used to get. LOVELY temperment smart as anything.....still pees for Ireland...not sure if he can help it though.

Now the Question:.....retired vet had a quick look at him per my request....I Think his testicle(s) are super tiny for his age....barely visable vet says he has only one and it is abnormally small ...

What I want to know...does having very tiny testicles account for his developmental problems? And could it affect his lack of control of his pee...?
Retired vet says no...but I am not so sure....he will see the proper vet soonest but my curiosity is getting the better of me.

I have had dogs since I was small and never have I had a dog with such tiny bits at this age....If he were stray one would be forgiven for thinking he was already neutered....

Thanks
TA....

Hi, my pup is 5 mths and has non-existant testicles too :) in fact we joke we were sold a girl with a hernia :) :)

We are giving him til a year to see what happens down below as there are many threads on here saying about 'late starters' so to speak. It doesn't affect his pee though - he goes all through the night holding it, but during the day pees everywhere :( :)

On the serious side, OH is very concerned about 'the lack of' ( male concern/sympathy thing here?  :) ) and can't wait til the 'drop' LOL

Puppies can all go through odd growth phases, it can be for many reasons too much protein can be a cause.

My pup was very 'loose', 'floppy' & un-coordinated (never a prob with the size of his 'doo das'), he was walking so badly he looked like he was crippled. I changed his diet to lower protein (18%) and within 4 weeks everything 'tightened' up, he still has moments when he seems loose, but they are few & far between.

My pup also peed a lot, it seemed like he was constantly having a wee, now his diet has changed his wees seem to be more normal in qtny.

When you see the vet he sould go though your pups diet and may recomend a change in food.

My pup is getting a food with 18% protein..he had been on a puppy food with I think about 23%. As a very young pup he had problems with his front legs and needed to be on calcium supplements for several weeks. He still has a weekness there but not as bas as before. Going by your call name I reckon you have large breed puppy. Mine is a Pom x Sheltie so I would assume he would mature faster and should be further along than he is. He has been on the lower protein food for quite some time and I would have expected a change by now if it was his food.

He did get a bad start...his mother died when he was 2weeks and the farmer who had him and his siblings did what he thought was right but they were all mlnourished for about 3 weeks when we got them in. None of the others seem to have his problems. (We had a family reunion not long ago so was able to compare).

It is something to think about though.

When he wee' it is never a large quantity and he almost does it on the run. Several of the girls in work who have more experience than I do have said....it just seems like he is not aware. He doesn't squat....try to lift his leg or give any indication that he is even going.  He is a great wee thing and I probably am over reacting....

I just can't seem to get my head round the fact he is on first level abilities with obedience training....and still cant twig...toilet OUTSIDE....he poos outside fine just not pee

Thanks
Ta

yes, my username is a givaway I have a Mastiff :) I also changed my pups (Buster) food because he had problems with his front legs - he had weak pasterns & his feet were turning out - rectified by the food change :)

When Buster was weeing loads I was worried that he had some sort of bladder problem as he would just wee wherever he was standing and would even wee in his bed, he didn't seem to know he needed to go until it was happening and on a couple of occasions he even weed while walking around and didn't appear to notice he was doing it :(

It is possible that the bladder takes longer to mature than normal, in which case it can result in bed wetting & weeing when & where they shouldn't, but this is something they can outgrow. It' also possible that your pup has some sort of medical problem like an infection (I'm not sugesting he has a prob like this just a possible cause)or that he is just one of the pups that take a little longer to catch on.

I don't think you're over-reacting atall, especially when the poor little guy has had such a rough start in life :( Any worries, no matter how small or silly sounding are always worth getting checked out by the vet, the vets dont think caution is silly they are happy people take such a caring approach to thier pets health.

Good luck at the vets :)
