I have have  10 week old GR puppy. Typical of his breed (and puppies lol) he likes to chew and eat everything so currently he is always on a lead in the garden (after retrieving two cat poos, a snail and some gravel from his mouth!) I didn't think it was sensible to let him chew the plants so haven't however I didn't realise that some were so dangerous until reading the kennel club puppy guide I just received. I have many of the plants listed in my garden such as; lupins, hydrangias, dafoddils, ivy, fox gloves etc.

Am I best advised to get rid of all of these? I will continue to supervise whilst he is a pup but eventually will want to trust him out there on his own. I would be sad to dig up half my much loved garden, however will of course do what I need to to make sure he is safe. The kennel club guide say's if any of these plants are either eaten or chewed I must seek vetinary attention. Are any of them poisonous or is it just a case of a dicky tummy?

I would welcome anyone's thoughts before I dig up my plants!

Love Ozx

Hi
Lots of those plants are dangerous to us so will be more so to dogs. It can be the seeds, leaves, roots or even the sap from certain plants that can have an effect. Some dogs wont touch the plants ,and others will dig or chew them like crazy. To be on the absolute safe side, it is best to get rid of the plants.

Look for the list of plants poisonous or irritant to humans and dogs to make doubly sure.

Also, not sure where you are , but there are 'hotspots ' for lungworm caused frm eating slugs, snails and fox poo so check that too!!

Good luck

Some plants are toxic to dogs (and cats)
I tried to get rid of all my fox gloves when the dogs arrived, never needed to with Missie as she didn't touch them but the leos will eat anything! I say tried because the darn things keep popping up even after 4 years of removing them. I've now sectioned a part of the garden away from the dogs, just so I could keep some plants  :) and lots of hanging baskets up out of their way ;)

Thanks ladies these are extremley helpful. The fox Gloves and lupins will go straight away I have a hydrangea he always goes for which will also come up.  I will just have to keep an eye on him with the Ivy and clematis as it is covering a trellis - maybe I'll put a small fence up inbetween so he can't get to them. I will be very sad to see my lupins go :(

you couldn't section off a piece of the garden? it is nice to have an area for plants and where you are free of poos etc.
