can anyone enlighten me??
i have returned from a fab day at crufts watching the judging
i was always under the impression that a dog that beats a dog in one class cannot be beaten by the same dog in a later class??
i noticed that a dog that was placed in its grad glass was then beaten by an unplaced dog from the grad class in a later class??
can the judge do this or do you think it was just a mistake by the judge??
any thoughts/facts would be appreciated

This has happened to me, so I know it's possible, but are you absolutely sure it was the same dog, and not just the same handler with another dog the same colour and sex.

happened to me a coupl of years ago. got second with dobie in group rottie fifth. then stayed in ring with same rottie for avnsc open there were no other entrants. the judge turned round and said rottie first!!! she refused to alter placings because the rottie was standing better when she glanced accross!!!

It's perfectly legit.  If, for instance, a dog is lame in one class then sound in the next it could be unplaced in the first class and placed in the next.  Or if it was having a 'moment', as dogs do, the same could apply.

It's not usual but it does happen occasionally.

Happened to me too when i first started showing. I had beaten a certain dog in puppy and i had entered maiden and novice. I was then placed behind this dog in maiden. I didnt understand what was happening so some very experienced exhibitors came and told me to speak to the steward about it. It seems it was his fault initially as he hadn't lined us up on the right order. The other dog was owned also by a very experienced exhibitor who should have known we were lined up wrong. The steward apologised and spoke to the judge, she said her decision was final and wouldn't change the placings!!!

It normally happens because of a mistake.. but it CAN happen because a dog has 'settled' by next class

It has happened to me... with Ollie (who else lol)  I was placed.. but low in the line up.. and actually thought about withdrawing from next class.. but I figured Ollie needed the experience... as it happens he took a 1st. in his following class.. and I queried it...

The judge explained to us that I did have the superior dog, but on her 1st assessment, she could not go over him properly because he was too playful.(Bouncing). in this class he had settled, and allowed her to go fully hands on.. his movement got him a place in the 1st class.. his conformation and movement got him his better place in his 2nd class... beating 2 of the dogs which beat him in his 1st class...she was happy with her decision and stuck with it

her critique in the dog paper also clarified her placings... :)
