Health / Scientific evidance nutering dogs reduces risk of cancer
Is there any? Everytime I go to my vets they try to get my to get both my dogs nutered. I have no intentions of breeding them my staffy as he is not an excellent example of the breed and my lurcher, well the cat and dog shelters are overrun with them, even though he is excellently well bred 30 year of breeding went into him. Both get on well I have no fighting like the vets said I would and they are happy healthy dogs, so why change a thing.
When I go to the vets they say it reduces my dogs chances of getting cancers in later life and will let them live longer, this really pulls at my heart strings as we lost our last dog to cancer and he was not nutered. If their is scientific evidence I will consider getting them nutered as if it ment they will live longer and healthier lives it will be worth it.
Thanks
Sheli
There is always going to be scientific proof either way. I must admit to neutering my bitches once they are past breeding age, but that is to prevent any accidents, not for any other reason. Only one of my bitches died with a cancer related illness. Do what you feel is right, not what the vets want you to do. The old adage of 'it is ain't broke, don't fix it' comes to mind. ;-)

I don't know but there are details out there that show neutering early highers the risk of other cancers and other illnesses!

I never got my lurcher done and she lived to nearly 15 years....

My Pomeranain's also have lived into the mid late teens without any cancers. I had my first SWD PTS at 12 years of age but that was due to her being deaf and then going almost blind and she just couldn't cope with losing the two senses so close to each other.
Thanks for replying, very interesting link. I have a bitch too who is neutered she is 11 and going strong. My dogs are 6 and 3 and fit and healthy. My MIL's staffy was neutered at a young age and she lost him to cancer at the age of 8.
I have changed vets since and my new vets have not mentioned neutering to me once.
Thanks
