Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Attention barking at visitors!

Coco, a Tibetan Terrier, is nearly 2 now & haven't had to ask anything for a long time, but in the last couple of months he barks at visitors. Unless they make a constant fuss of him (unacceptable!!)which I can't seem to stop. How can I teach him that this is not good behaviour?  Whn he was younger he would bark on arrival of a friend & then when stroked , go & lay down quietly, but no longer!!
Tried giving him hide bones to chew, or the visitor giving him one, but he isn't interested. Please help, as will have no friends left soon!!

In our house, this kind of behaviour has the opposite effect to what they want ;)  So barking at us (welcome!) when we come in would result in being put out of the room for a few minutes and totaly ignored ;)  it worked with our youngest girl who started to get gobby at about the same age ;)   Barking at cats in the garden results in immediately being put in the house (no fun when there's cats to tell off!)  hasn't stopped them entirely but means they think a bit before being really gobby :-D :-D

Don't know if it would work for you, but Tibetans are really bright and quick to learn so he would soon work out that it isn't getting him what he wants :)

thank you, I think it may work if we sit indoors, but it didn't yesterday, as we were in the conservatory & he could still see us, but I will try again.......& keep trying!
