Topic Dog Boards / Showing / BIS at Crufts - betting suspended!
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 06.03.08 08:52 UTC
According to Radio 4, one of the main bnetting shop chains has suspended betting on BIS at Crufts because of "abnormal activity"!

Come on - let's knock the gamblers off their perches - there are always whispers that "of course the.......is going to go BIS" - so why don't we nail all these rumours by naming the dogs that we have heard are going BIS!!!!

Sh Ch Aust Ch Hungargunn Bear It'n Mind (Imp) I think he will take some beating this year.
- By LJS Date 06.03.08 09:34 UTC Edited 06.03.08 09:36 UTC
Just had a google and what a stunning dog !

The bets seem to be on one from the Utility group according to the news.
- By supervizsla Date 06.03.08 09:44 UTC
Really hoping it will be Sh Ch Aust Ch Hungargunn Bear It'n Mind (Imp) but don't want Vizslas to become a new fashion as they arn't for just anyone.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.03.08 09:45 UTC
Why would anyone be surprised at there being favourites as of course the list of Top dogs from the previous year shows which dogs were consistent, and therefore they have a good chance, but of course any dog could win, but those with a track record of winning are more likely..
- By peaches1 [gb] Date 06.03.08 10:55 UTC
Must admit my money would be on the Vizsla too. He is just stunning and i think its got to be his time. Failing that, my golden retriever would please me!!!!LOL!!!!!!

Let's face it - any one of us could have the most stunning dog on earth.  But if the run of judges (breed, group. BIS) think differently, we'd get nowhere :)  It's more luck with having the right judges on the right day than anything else when it gets to that level.

don't think "Yogi" is being shown at Crufts this year - Aren't both his handlers judging??
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 06.03.08 12:37 UTC
Yes having checked you are quite right both John Thirwell and Maurry Armstrong are judging.
- By supervizsla Date 06.03.08 12:39 UTC
Thats a shame.  I think one was judging last year too.
- By TEILO [gb] Date 06.03.08 13:36 UTC Edited 06.03.08 13:38 UTC
I   think the Terrier Group winner
will be a SOFT COATED WHEATEN TERRIER
NORWICH  GROUP TWO
AUSTRAILIAN  GROUP THREE
SCOTTIE    GROUP FOUR
Belongs to a Friend from America
could be in with a shout  for BIS   The SCWT
its a hell  of a Dog
- By Soli Date 06.03.08 13:38 UTC
Could it be the American Standard Poodle?  Heard on the grapevine he was coming over.

According to BBC news:

William Hill said it closed the book on which category of dog would win Best in Show after a "flurry of activity" over two days backed a "utility" dog winner.

Odds for the usually unfancied group, which includes dalmations and bulldogs, were slashed from 13-2 to 1-2.

The firm's Rupert Adams said: "There must be people in the know who are aware of an absolute wonder dog."
- By Polo Date 06.03.08 14:26 UTC
Well he's won the open dog so far! I'm excited I hope the standard (whichever dog gets BOB) does well!
- By gummy Date 06.03.08 14:53 UTC
Having an interest in betting generally it is perplexed to read the comments made by William Hill. They must have laid substantial bets at around 6/1 on the poodle and now quote 1/2 & suspend betting.
Odds on is very unnattractive as a punter, you wouldnt see many steaming in at those odds, even fewer who have had the 6/1.
I suspect the book will be re-opened when BOB is completed or the group is decided.
If it does win the group it will become 'a talking dog' in the media, we will have to wait until tonights coverage for that eulogy.
If the dog gets the group then I would expect odds to be quoted at even bigger odds on, with only 7 group winners odds could be as low 1/10 (£10 pound stake to win £1).
betting is facinating, odds compilation is a science.

"There must be people in the know who are aware of an absolute wonder dog."

Well surely the dogs that are entered are no secret??  If there is an outstanding exhibit then people would be aware anyway.
- By Soli Date 06.03.08 14:57 UTC
Well surely the dogs that are entered are no secret??

If the dog is coming in from abroad it's quite possible that not many people (if any apart from it's owners) will know it'll be there until the day.

I'm wondering if this isn't a ruse by the betting company to get some publicity.

I see - I don't show so didn't realise this.

Sounding thick (as usual) but can you not get a list of the dogs entered before you get to the show?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.03.08 15:19 UTC
Not in the UK, your not supposed to know who the competition are until you get there.  I was shocked to find out on a Polish dog forum that people knew which dogs are entered and then decide whether to go based on their rivals being there.
- By CALI2 [de] Date 06.03.08 15:24 UTC
Yes Barbara I was shocked when I got an email telling me what dogs were entered and in what class at a show that I had entered here.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.03.08 15:28 UTC
I mean we do tell people that we have entered a show, but the details are not known and are not supposed to be available for the judges especially who are in theory supposed to be unaware of the identity of any dog they judge..
- By sandrah Date 06.03.08 15:28 UTC
The Standard Poodle from America has a full page advertisment in Our Dogs Crufts supplement.
- By georgepig [gb] Date 06.03.08 15:42 UTC
Brainless - that would make sense to me as I guess the aim is to reduce any possible bias, though in practice I am sure this is not the case.

Flaunting a dog such as in the post above just screams of arrogance to me (sorry if I've offended!)
- By Chrisy [gb] Date 06.03.08 15:52 UTC Edited 06.03.08 16:07 UTC
Hi xanthom,
I think Yogi is beautiful.
Don't follow betting but, could the working be a Giant Schnauzer? Either excuse the spelling - Jafrax Philip olivia handled by Kevin Cullen, twice in the final six or his son Riesenheim suited and Booted.:-)
Though I'm bias
- By georgepig [gb] Date 06.03.08 15:57 UTC
Those dogs crossed my mind as well!!
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 06.03.08 16:02 UTC
Well they won't be the Utility winners, as Giant Schnauzers are in the Working group ...

- By georgepig [gb] Date 06.03.08 16:05 UTC
Sorry - I meant they had crossed my mind as possible big winners as I see the Fathers name all over the place.

I didn't realise the utility group had been mentioned :need embarrased smiley:
- By Chrisy [gb] Date 06.03.08 16:06 UTC

Yogi is owned by Naomi  Cragg and Kathryn Armstrong ,  he is eligible to show at Crufts but I read in DW this week that he wont be out till May.

"The Standard Poodle from America has a full page advertisment in Our Dogs Crufts supplement"

didnt win them the group tho!!
- By Fillis Date 06.03.08 23:31 UTC
lol TEILO - there has only ever been 1 BIS win at  ch show by a SCWT, and very few group placings, let alone winners, so that prediction if it comes true (I really hope it doesnt!) could win you an absolute fortune ;-) I do hope you are not trying to curry favour with the SCWT judge - with your breeds, you may know him. :-D I think we should all give our predictions on here so we can scream "told you so" to the bookies (well, one of us should be right).
- By TEILO [gb] Date 07.03.08 12:30 UTC
I  know  the breed judge, and Think he has judged the dog in

- By TEILO [gb] Date 07.03.08 14:24 UTC
CORRECT ALIC JAMES WAS THE GROUP JUDGE,
- By Natsmom [gb] Date 08.03.08 15:25 UTC
Well how about a long shot..........the GSD for the pastoral group, the World Sieger Zamp Thermodos has just won the dog ticket, if he gets BOB he could well get a look in for the group, he has to be the best GSD in the world at the moment and I think he won BIS at The World Show in Dortmond last year.
Cross fingers he gets BOB.
- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 08.03.08 17:02 UTC
i can understand why poodles had high bets for BIS.
I hope the yank does well in BIS i think he is a fantastic dog, i need to watch all the group winners then i will decide lol

This is also a  Stallion of a Dog,
ZAMP VOM THERMODOS
- By Natsmom [gb] Date 08.03.08 19:47 UTC
I think the whole GSD world is buzzing and watching and waiting for Zamp to appear in the group, no matter what type you prefer this dog has to be perfection!!
- By Crespin Date 08.03.08 21:51 UTC
It is more likely when the breed has a track record, but from looking at this years in dog shows (mind you I dont get Crufts coverage) it seems to be the dogs that havent done the winning.

The BIS line up for Westminster, 5 out of the 7 dogs in it, their breeds have NEVER taken BIS, and then to see the 15 Inch Beagle take it (being a breed that hasnt won), was just amazing.  Maybe this years crufts will be a surprise win as well!

Didnt know you could bet on dog shows, interesting.  I would normally place my bet on a Poodle, if I was going to, since they have a really good track record for BIS and such here.

ETA: Sh Ch Aust Ch Hungargunn Bear It'n Mind  looks really nice (just googled it).
- By Kash [gb] Date 08.03.08 21:54 UTC
I agree- the GSD is a top dog :-)

I couldn't have agreed more!  Shame about the way it went.

Yes it pulled away from the handler.

Yogi, was not there this yr!!

Really hoping it will be Sh Ch Aust Ch Hungargunn Bear It'n Mind (Imp) but don't want Vizslas to become a new fashion as they arn't for just anyone

Sadly,  it is to late for that....the Vizsla has become a very popular breed to own..

Vizsla rescue are seeing the results of this already.

Lovely breed,  my friend breeds them... but as you say not a breed for everyone

>the Vizsla has become a very popular breed to own..

They do seem to be increasing in popularity.  I had never seen one here until about a year go and I have seen quite a few different ones since then.  There was even a litter advertised for sale in Pets at Home a few weeks ago :-(

>Sadly,  it is to late for that....the Vizsla has become a very popular breed to own..

This is true and very sad indeed.  I find it very upsetting when I see them being treated wrong and just not in the right environment.

Hopefully their popularity will die down.  I have to say when ever people stop me to see what breed Ziggi is I make a point of telling them the rather challenging points of owning a vizsla.

All the best
Anna
