Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Brothers joined at the hip from pup's, now agression!!!
- By Shiv [gb] Date 04.03.08 17:21 UTC
Hi All,
My partner has 2 dogs (Brothers), they have been joined at the hip from birth. They are 2 1/2 now. Casper shows an agression to other dogs -stiff tail, ear's up, etc. Never attacked, but clearly we will not take off the lead for this reason. In the last 3 months Casper has shown agression to his brother. They also live with a younger dog, they have been all brought up together, but he only growls or shows agression towards his brother. It has got to the point now, they cannot even be in the same room. We separated them last week and they are living in separate houses, when we tried to introduce them to see how they would get on a few days after, Casper showed agression like never before - This was through patio doors, we were not going to chance letting them be in the same room.
Has anyone ever experienced this, if so what did you do, and can you please advise.
Thank you in advance,
S

Unfortunately this is one of the many reasons for why it is such a bad idea to have littermates. Apart from all the hard work etc, unless it is one dog and one bitch, in most breeds there is a huge risk of the brothers or the sisters falling out once they are fully mature as there just isn't any age difference between them and they cannot work out who's the higher ranking. In some breeds it will work, for instance Golden Retrievers and Cavaliers are known to get on with any dog any time in MOST cases, but in most other breeds, littermates of the same sex is something that just won't work. Unfortunately there isn't an awful lot that can be done that has proved to be really successful. It's possible to try to increase the "distance" between them by neutering one but not the other, treating the entire one in a different way etc to mark there is meant to be a difference between them and one comes first, but whether it will work or not will depend largely on the breed and how big a problem it has become.
