Has everyone got the schools they wanted, we didnt get the one we applied for but got second choice. Gutted it now means Matthew will have to go to a mixed school and its what I really didnt want.

I actually like mixed schools :) Both my son and daughter went to a mixed grammar school in preference to single sex schools and think it has helped them to get on with the opposite sex without finding interraction with them a big deal. My son has lots of friends who are girls - still keeps in contact with them even now, and my daughter also has a lot of friends who are boys :)

Interestingly enough, when my daughter was still at school, the school which had the most teenage pregnancies amongst it's pupils was a girls grammar school. Teenage years are difficult and I think, for our family, that attending a mixed school made the opposite sex no big deal for both my children. My son, who was prone to only doing the bare essentials for his academic progress, actually worked harder at his mixed school because he didn't want to be beaten by the girls.

Hopefully your son will settle in quickly at the school he has been given :)

i feel sorry for my son because all his friends are ringing him up telling him where they are going and who's got inro grammar and we still don't know (ARHHH)

Yes you do, you have to give a choice of three and different factors get taken into consideration i.e distance, siblings at the school etc i heard on the news that some places are bringing in a sort of lottery so that in areas where only the upper classes get to go to a certain school because of area all classes will be given the same chance.

It's a hard time isn't it......we had it last year, it is an 11+ system here, so we had to wait to discover which of three schools daughter had been selected for, and they dont discover here til the whitsun break.

Thats what it is like with the one we applied for, first they take into consideration where you live, siblings and then its a bit of a lottery for the remaining places. over 500 apply for this school and there are only 198 places. Now I have to appeal and try and get him in that way.

wow that sucks. up here you go to whichever school your in the catchment area of...you can try and get into others outside your catchment if you want though. luckily for me i lived in the catchment of a really good school!

The school he got into isnt that bad, its just I wanted him to go to a single sex school and our first choice is the best in the area. We dont come into the catchment area for any other boys school.

I am still waiting to hear. Worried that there is a delay because we didn't get the choice we want. Other half works in secondry education so we only put one school on the form , that way if we fail we have a right of appeal. Hope it arrives tomorrow

I was very lucky with my daughter. Although in Scotland you don't have the same choice as you do in England you can ask for your child to go to a different school than the one in your catchment area. Though they do take into account the reason why you want a different school. I was working in a town that meant that I couldn't be at home when my daughter left school at night so she was allowed to go to the school in the town where I was working. When she went up to secondary school I thought that she would just go up with her friends, but no, they wanted her to go to the nearest one. I appealed and she got in to the good one with her friends. Mind you, her father lives in the town and could take her from school if she was ill, so I think that also helped ;-)

out of interest can i ask why you are wanting him to go to an all boys school?

My son goes to an all boys and my daughter goes to the same all girls school that I went to and now work at ;) We have a mixed 6th form and theere is plenty of interaction between the schools :)

I went to an all girls school, I think there is less distraction at single sex schools. The school I wanted for him has an excellent ofsted report and specialise in maths and science both of which are his best subjects. The school we got isn't that bad other than it has the highest teen pregnancy rate out of all the schools in the area.
Its just personal choice I suppose.

Got my letter today, Amy is in the school we wanted. One less thing to worry about then!!!!

I went to a single sex school & it was the biggest mistake my mum thinks she ever made.

My grandson has been lucky,he has got into the school up the road from the middle school where he currently is It is a mixed school and most of his classmates have got in to.
