I have not had a puppy for a long time and am a little rusty on housebreaking issures also obedience and behavior training. My lab is now 9 weeks old. She was only 6 weeks old when I got her which according to my vet was to early. Do you have any helpful hints? For housebreaking I schedule feed her and take away her food and water at night and put her in a carry kennel as she is an inside dog. What do I do when she has accidents on the floor to let her know that this is wrong? She does cry vigorously when she has to go to the bathroom but not always at the door and she goes immediatly not always allowing enough time to get her out.

Hi guest :)

You need to take your puppy out regularly at , say , 15-20 minute intervals and , when she performs , use a word of choice so that she will begin to associate that word with the action. When she has performed make a big fuss of her and praise like mad.

If she has an accident , pick her up and take her outside but do not tell her off.

Use biological soap powder to wash any patches that she has christened in the house and this will help rid the scent.

If all else fails , use the Search facility on the Forum and type in House Training ...should bring up quite a few discussions

Hi
Like Melodysk already stated - Never scold after, you have to catch him in
the act ,the puppy has to Know what he is being told off for.
I could always tell when my dog wanted to go out, she would pace up and down sniffing the ground , and as she grew older she would go to the door
Have a look in one of the Forums , someone has already asked about puppy training and there are some usefull replys which might help.
It sounds as if you are almost there,She is going to the door, and she is giving some signal , as she getts older she will be able to hold long enough .
I'm not sure about removing her water at night, I have always left water down for the dogs ( they have a complete dry food , so I always give them access to fresh water).
But the most important thing - invest in some good carpet cleaner, because there are always little mistakes.
Good luck

You are expecting too much from a 9 week old pup, if she cries to go out you are well on the way to winning but you will have to wait for her body to catch up with her brain. She knows she wants to go but is physicaly is unable to hold on for you to get there. All puppies take a different time to be completely clean indoors, they usualy get control of their bowl first but can have lapses sometimes and the bladder control follow some time later, again lapses can happen. Take her out after food, after play, when she wakes and at intervals between, go out with her and wait until the act has happened praise and let her back in. Praise for a wee in the right place and unless you see the act indoors ignore it. Never slap or shout the pup would be clean if it could but you and she will have to wait for the physical development to make it possible. Jackie H

My Lab pup is 11 1/2 weeks old now, I had her from 8 weeks.

For the first week I had to watch her constantly for signs of going to the toilet (like getting agitated and going in circles and sniffing) so I could get her outside quickly and then when she went I would praise her to the skies.. to which she would look quizically at me... :D

Yours is giving you lots of signals which is great for you and you are doing all the other things right like getting her out after a nap, food etc. Mine is getting the idea now, she trots off to the back door or the patio door when she wants out.

Don't worry too much, mine still has the odd accident, usually my fault for not being quick enough to let her out. (She is clean at night though and doesn't have a crate.)
