When requiring more "body " on a dog is it true that adding meat to her diet (arden grange ) might achieve this .My breeder has recomented this . I also wonder if more exersice along with this may help build muscle . I have bought raw green tripe but would like an opinion/advise from other breeders .Thanks

Hi
I would feed high protein diet to improve the physique along with a measured excercise program. the amount of food and length of excercise depends how old your dog is, puppies and young dogs should not be over exercised to avoid problems with skeletol development.
Muscle mass will be increased with more exercise, but i would recommend increased on lead road walking to improve overall muscle tone. That should show improvement in feet, pasterns and muscle condition.
The type of food you choose is a personal choice, yours or your dog, whether you supplement the existing food, or go for an all-in food, the alternatives are endless.

When I wanted to get my girl fit and well muscled I got a higher protein food, also added raw tripe, raw breast of lamb, sardines, raw eggs (not all at once) just added to different meals. I increased her exercised a bit with free running (off lead) and road walking everyday, so road walking was morning and free running in the evening. I personally believe both is essential to cover all muscles. Keep an eye on the food intake and if looking a little lean increase a little bit. I actually cycle with my dog trotting along beside me which is sooo much easier than walking and I could get her to stay at a steady pace. I'm currently getting at 5.30am every morning to road walk her before work so she is nice and fit for Crufts! :)

How much road walking would you people recommend as part of a good all round programme to keep a dog in nice condition, and also build up muscle?

I think it really depends on your dog. Mine is a Beagle and I started with 2 miles every morning worked up to 3 miles then dropped back to 2 miles. Free running for about 40 mins, I am very lucky as we have a large fully fenced paddock for the dogs to run in. I think this is quite alot but it's what she needed. Now I do about a 1 1/2 miles a morning to maintain her condition.

At the min due to the dark nights he's getting about 1.5 miles per night on the road followed by free running.  It is mainly ball chasing and training in the morning on park opposite our house.
I do vary where we go all the time and he is capable of going a fair distance when we go out at the weekend.  He has built up to this so it's not like it's all duirng the weekend and nothing during the week.

I have needed to add more body to my little terrier but she is very difficult at times with eating - no matter what i add! she does get an hours walk daily which involves free running and lead walking and then if i have time she gets 30 mins road walking in the afternoon.

Its getting her to eat thats the problem!
