Hi my bitch  had 7 puppies on 1st Feb, all seemed to be going really well, but today one of them which is the smallest was not suckling as normal, very quiet, not himself at all, so i took him to the vet.  He has a temp of 103.6 a bit dehydrated, his respiration is fine.  He has been given some saline, and is on antibiotics 3x a day plus i have been given some whelpi. I have been told to keep him separate form the others let mum still nurse him but top it up with the whelpi if required and to keep a close eye on the other puppies.  The vet think it may be puppy fading syndrome but apparently that covers a lot of things, he thinks he may of picked up some infection.  I am really worried ,this is my first litter and i would really appreciate any advice from anyone who has experienced this or has any advice they can give me please. Thanks for reading

Sorry - have never bred at all but I do remember there being a fairly lengthy discussion on fading puppy syndrome. Put it in the search facility and you should come up with lots of information, but as far as I can recall, I think some speedy veterinarian intervention is called for.

Really hope your pup picks up :)

I am so sorry to hear about your little boy, puppies are a worry and heartache at times. I do hope that he picks up soon. As the others have said, latch him onto mum, it may help if you express a little milk onto her teat first and if needs be open his mouth and place the teat inside. The back teats are the better ones as they have more milk. If he hasn't the strength to get the milk flowing I would put a stronger pup on the teat first to get milk down then swap them over. It is important if you are keeping the pup away from the rest of the litter that you keep him warm, either on a heat pad under his bedding or a heat lamp, make sure though if mum isn't toileting him that you do it for him. I would also stress that as they are coming up to 2 weeks old and will need worming shortly that you do not worm this little one until he is a little better.
Good luck with him and I hope you have some good news for us.

are you sleeping with them at night as it,s important the the poorly boy is feeding through the night if you have,nt noticed the bitch toileting the pup hold him gently up and tip him so his back is in the palm of your hand and put his bum and bits to the bitch she should start to lick him and make him go to the loo poo and wee hope he,s ok watch carefully if you shuold put heat lamp on him though if you put it to near he wont be able to move away if he,s weak keep us posted
