How do you go about applying for an affix, what you have to do etc as i am thinking about breeding in the future, not yet as i dont have the right set up to have a litter of puppies, any info on this would be much appreciated thankyou Diane

If you go to the KC's website you should be able to download an affix registration form from there.

You'll need to think up six names that you like because there are so many affixes in existance, you may not get your first choice (Mine was my 9th!). Then you send it away with an extortionate fee and the KC will then contact you after that.

This is a very simplified version but that's basically it. An affix is a good idea as it identifies you as a breeder and the puppies you breed especially if they have an impact on your breed.

Also how do you go about getting the eye checks done, where do you have to go to obtain the certificate for i presume clear eyes?

Hi metpol, the eye testing is usually done at a vets, or some breed clubs shows ie Goldies, have someone present to do eye checks. Not all vets do them, so you may have to phone around a bit

Eye testing sessions similar to the ones organised by Polly and myself are organised all over the country. These are usually advertised in Our Dogs and Dog World. Sessions are also often organise by some breed clubs usually held in conjunction with their open show. Another possibility is at Game Fairs. One of these possibilities is normally the cheapest because we have no surgery overheads to add and we can normally get a reduction because we can submit quite a few dogs at one time. For example we get anything from 50 to up to 100 dogs at our session! Failing that the panel ophthalmologists hold surgeries around the country. The nearest to you is:-

S Turner MA VetMB DVOphthal MRCVS
Who holds part time clinic at
Stone Lion Veterinary Centre
41 High Street
Wimbledon Common
London SW19 5AU

I don’t know how often this clinic is held but as a part time clinic it is possibly one day a week so you will need to phone to find out and to make an appointment.

Thankyou john for that, that is where they take the police dogs that have had eye problems.

You need a form 10 from the KC's website. Then supply three names and send off £70  and they promise you an affix in 10 working days. 6 working days and counting since I put mine in. It's then I think a £15 or £17 annual maintenance fee.

Think of something unusual. I have the directory of affixes. So if you think of some you can e-mail me and I'll let you know if they are taken.
