Apologies in advance if I'm being a bit thick! (quite likely) :-D
Has anyone out there tried a human pregnancy test on a dog, you know, the kind you wee on, if so did it work, or are dogs pregnancy hormones completely different to ours?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 02.02.08 15:43 UTC
It wouldn't work. Bitches secrete the same hormones after a season whether or not they're pregnant.

Thank You :-)

Is there a pregnancy testing kit for dogs ?
- By cocopop [gb] Date 02.02.08 21:50 UTC
I don't think their can be, considering all the 'is she, isn't she' posts there are. :-)

No. And the scientist who manages to invent one will be a millionaire!

I used the matetel test to decide on the date to mate. I was told by another breeder that if you do the test again on her 14th day  after mating if the matetel shows ferning again she should be pregnant.
I did this just to see if it worked and blow me down tested her on the 13day nothing 14th day ferning  I had her scanned at 30 days and she is showing 7 puppies ..what do you make of that !!

I am very scheptical.  I would say both with mating and pregnancy as the bitch has such a high conception rate your bound to be ring more often than not test or no test, and I would like to see these things proved to work with proper tests.

It is a bit like predicting the likelihood of rain when the sky is overcast, or a child will choose sweets over broccoli.

I used Mate Tel, found it quite difficult to get a decent amount of saliva, but I did get a little ferning on the day which the vet's testing showed I should have mated her on (took her 2 days later when the results came through) and also on day 13 or whatever day it was they said to try after mating I did get ferning and sure enough we got 2 puppies!

I would sit with a biscuit in my hand and the dog in a sit for a few minutes I could see the saliva dripping from her mouth , lift the lip and  run the tester along then give the biscuit as a reward.

Oooh good idea Starryeyes!
I'll have to try that with my black bitch when shes next due a heat. I was wondering the best way to get a good amount of slobber!
Silly really knowing how much my breed love to eat (especially this bitch in particular!)

There is a pregnancy test for bitches and queens. It is a simple test which test for the hormone relaxin in the blood serum.Relaxin is only present in pregnant bitches or queens. The test is accurate from day 30

I had heard the test threw up a lot of false results and isn't popular.  to be honest by day 30 I woudl know from Palpation or scanning if the bitch was pregnant with no need for needles.

DON'T DO NEEDLES, i'll stick to my scans

I have only ever premate tested one bitch and getting the blood drawn (3 days in a row) was a nightmare.  took me lots of visits for just a fuss and weigh to convince her the Vet wasn't evil :D.  She would bounce in, all bravado, have a quick fuss with vet staff and head for the door at speed :D
- By RRfriend [se] Date 06.02.08 04:06 UTC
My vet doesn't scan. They do offer the relaxin blood test, though. But it's not allways accurate, and can't be taken until the fifth week. So, as someone above said, by then you'll probably know, anyway.

I did try baiting her with a treat, perhaps not for long enough. There's always next time!

I think getting blood from the neck is far easier on dogs.

I just blood tested a bitch last week, got my dates all wrong as she was having a bit of a colourless season so I did 4 tests before she was ready..  they are so expensive to but if you are travelling 1000 miles etc  it is jut another sunk cost I guess :-)
