Im really unhappy with a operation I had on a broken arm back in september and so is my physio.  However my surgeon is not agreeing with us that there is something wrong (however looking at it alone you can see and I still have no movement in my hand and arm 4mths later) 

I was wondering how do you go about going to see a private othopedic Dr privately?  Also would my NHS Surgeon need to know that I had been private for a second opinion. (I dont have private health cover though)

I am a massage therapist and hairdresser by trade and have been out of work since sept so it is getting really difficult now.

Give BUPA a ring!  It usually costs about £100.00 to see a consultant privately.

Might be worth making a formal complaint to the hospital if you haven't already done so, I took this route after an operation to repair a tendon left  me with less use then when the tendon was cut, the hospital arranged for an independent doctor to review my case, they also gave me all the information I needed to take further action.

They cost about £250 a consultation now or they do around here

Contact your local Nuffield Hospital and they should have a list of Consultants for you to go and see.

It would be worth as well getting your most recent Xrays to take with you as well and also a report from your Physio as will avoid follow up appointments and extra costs ;-)

You are legally entitled to a second opinion on the nhs, so ask your gp to arrange this for you. Paying privately wont necessarily get you a better surgeon...as the private surgeons usually are nhs surgeons anyway. Get some recommendations from locals, perhaps your physio could suggest someone good. Please dont feel bad about asking......and dont feel bad about your original surgeon finding out. Its your arm and your career at stake and you have every right to want it sorted. After four months it should be better, and as your physio also agrees this, you probably DO need a second opinion.

If you do your research you can choose who you see privately but in the NHS that is not always the case :-)

Yes you can see another consultant.  Put a request through the manager of the division I can tell you  now that they will sort it out for you.

My mum had a fall xmas 06 and broke her shoulder in two places, as it didnt heal she had to have it operated on a year later she went to another hospital to have another operation as she still couldnt use it, afterwards her consultant told her that part of her shoulder balde had been put back in the wrong way round so it wasnt surprising it didnt heal. Its worth asking for another opinion, you know your own body better than anyone else.

Yes they don't seem to follow the normal inflation rate trend !

My consltant was £175 for first consultation and then about £80 for any after. Obviously any extras like x-rays or blood tests were extra.

Go to your GP, and tell h/her you want a second opinion, and you want to go private....most GP`s  will have their own list of Specialists who they work with, so they will suggest someone  for you  to see,   but to be honest you are better (through recommendation, by people you know)   having a "name " ready, who you  would like to see before you see your GP , then you can tell h/her , "I want to see so and so"!

Your GP will give you a letter to take to the specialist  ,  you usually have to make your own appointment , (GP surgery will give you a phone number)

The cost will be depending on what you have done,  some Specialists will do the consolations  (private)  then put you on the NHS waiting list  if you cant afford treatment.

The Cost will be "how long is  a piece of string"  depending on how many times you see h/her, x-rays, blood work. 

My GP organised mine for me. She even made the appointment there and then. The annoying thing was I could have seen the same doctor on the NHS but had a 6 week wait minimum. To see him private I had a 4 day wait
