Topic Dog Boards / General / Coats for very little dogs - normal not fancy dress!

My new papillon is at that fuzzy between pup and adult stage and hasnt got a great deal of hair.  He is shivering like anything so Im going to get him a little coat - we are talking 6-8 inches here from neck to top of tail.  However all the coats that I can find are like dress up clothes!!!! All I want is a little ordinary red preferably, waterproof coat that doesnt have a hood or toggles or writing - you get what I mean.

How about an equafleece? The smallest they do is a 9" though. My Dobe has one and it's the best clothing item I've ever bought him. Had tried loads of coats before but the buckles etc would slip to one side or the coat would ruck up along the back etc. The fleeces are great as they have leg holes so stay in perfect position. They say water repellent but I've found them to be completely waterproof even in the worst weathers. They work by wicking away the water through the dog's body heat. The top can feel wet but underneath still all cosy and dry.

I like the Challenger coats from Countrymun. The fit well, are sensible and start at 20 cm. They're not red though.

OoOh just remembered - the equafleece sizing is from the centre of the chest to the tail not from the base of the neck so the fit should be ok!

If you can't get a water proof one, use a jumper for now, you can get plain red ones in almost any pet shop. That's what I did, as I found the only waterproof coats that fit Paps nicely are those sold at Crufts where the chest is covered as well and the strap around the tummy is easily adjustable -most other coats end up too big. I think they're called Cosy Coats and they don't have a website but they're always at Crufts.

I also have the equafleece coats on mine, the high viz ones so I can keep them in sight in the woods. Like Zarah said they remain completly dry underneath and are very quick to dry with them being fleece. They are definatly they best coats I have bought. Cali's is actually 4 years old now and still in good nick even after being washed god knows how many times!

I'll tell you what I did for my papillon puppy.  A sleeve from an old jumper, just turned over and sewn on the cut edge.  It might not look that attractive but if it's just to stop him getting cold out in the garden would work fine.  Although might not be quite so simple on a dog as a bitch!

I was in pets at Home the other day and they had a large range of coats and jumper, waterproof etc as well as a designer range, may be worth a look

ooh thankyou for all those links - lots to look at.  I really dont fancy a knitted one however nice they maybe - just because my teenage son has enough trouble taking a pap for a walk when he takes both dogs out for me sometimes, let alone with a little jumper on - it has to be a "conventional looking" coat.  I will let you know how I get on.

Another vote for Countrymun here, I have several different styles of their coats and am very satisfied with the quality and service.
