Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Are potatoes fattening?
- By marie pritchard [in] Date 18.01.08 00:00 UTC
Hi
Sorry i have another question regarding feeding Lillie,  she is on R/C hypoallergenic and is doing really well on it, but she won't eat it unless its got something tasty on there, which i don't blame her.
so I've been doing veggies, and things that she isn't allergic to, which is veggies and veggies, but are potatoes fattening because of the starch, I've been cooking a jacket potato for her, and mixing with the dried food, i have cut down the amount of dried i give her, but she looks like she is finally putting on a bit of weight, but after my post about me being worried she was too small, i know that she isn't now.And she now looks a little heavy round her middle.
sorry I'm really rambling, what I'm trying to ask is, as she likes potato is it ok to give it in every meal, or should i alternate, its so hard to get her to eat, it seems to be the only thing to tempt her.
any advice would be gratefully appreciated please :-)

Hi Marie,

I tend to use mashed potato instead of rice with chicken or white fish as a recovery diet and have found it to be very good :)  I've also used potato to bulk out meals for dogs not quite fully over a GI problem and have witnessed no issues with it.

As to whether it's fattening I'd imagine only in high quantity in the over all diet but in the instance of your girl being faddy yet unable to have much by way of variety then were she my dog I would probably alternate it with a small amount of veggies to keep her eating.

IME dogs which are poor eaters, whether there is a medical reason behind it or not, often develop a *habit* of simply always leaving some of their food in the bowl - no matter whether they have a smaller meal offered or not (where's that green roll eyes when I need it :-D ) so it's better to keep then enthused about what they are being offered whenever possible.

HTH, Teri

Hi Teri.

Thanks for your reply, i will try that of alternating the potato one day and veggies the next, just in case.

Its strange that you say about a habit of leaving food, because she has always left 3 bits of food in her bowl after eating ever since ive had her!
its a good job she likes veggies, else i really wouldn't know what to feed her on! thank you once again for your advice.:-)
