At about 5.30am they were amazing! I am sure I saw a falling star! The sky was really clear and it was covered in stars!

I didnt want to muck my horses out - I wanted to lie on the grass (mud!) staring at the sky!

I've heard that Mars is really visible at this time of year but i couldnt see a red planet. I did see a really bright light, much lower than the rest of the stars but much brighter (the North star?)

A good start to the day! :D

The bright low star you saw was probably Venus. :-) The Pole Star (North Star) is high up in the sky and not as bright as some others. Mars only appears reddish if seen through a telescope - to the naked eye there's not really a lot of difference in colour, just maybe a slightly 'warmer' shade of light.

Stargazing on a clear night is wonderful! As your eyes get used to the darkness you see more and more stars and the sky ends up appearing quite bright, with the Milky Way a broad band crossing from horizon to horizon. It can get quite scary when you realise how insignificant we all are in the universe!

It also varies as to where you are.  If you are in London you will see almost nothing, if you are in the middle of the countryside away from light pollution it can be amazing.  A few years ago I was in Africa and it really was amazing.

i was up one of the very isolated glens when i was at school and it was stunning

I was at a farm with only one or two houses near by so that probably explains why I could see them really well.

I didnt realise it was Venus :-o I would have stared at it longer if I had known! It was extremely bright! :D

Venus is very bright, it's one of the few things you can still see through the light pollution in London :(

What is that saying? Something like 'Never be too busy to not notice the stars'......... :)

I live out in the middle of nowhere - no streetlights or anything, and love to go out to look at the stars on a clear night.  It's absolutely stunning sometimes.

I quite often go out and look at the stars. It's the ones that move that give me a bit of a fright (planes........!?!?)
